Guy on craigslist had this tv for sale locally. Said it hasn't worked in a couple years. Asked him the symptoms and he said green blinking timer light on front.

Researched this and found that its common to have some capacitors go out prematurely due to their heat rating and voltage rating. Fix is to desolder and replace the 85 degree, 16 v caps with 105 degree, 35 volt caps. In all, I replaced 10 caps, 1000 microfarad and 2200 microfarad with some I ordered from digikey. Half of the caps were bulging and 2 had leaked a bit. The others looked good, but since I was in there already, I just replaced them.

Put it all back together tonight and voila, it powered up and I was watching tv.

I ended up paying $90.00 for the TV and about 20 bucks for the caps plus shipping (bought some spare caps)

I had to take out about a zillion screws, remove tons of cabling, etc, and in the end, it all worked, even with leftover parts

Its a WD-62725 model

Thinking this TV would go well out in my man cave (Garage). I already have a 65 inch rear projection in the basement. Maybe I'll just sell it and try to get $500.00 for it. Would be nice to have the extra cash right now for presents and some speakers.

thats pretty sweet. I'd figure with all the cables and soldering etc. at least 1 thing would have gone wrong to cause the TV not to work. Kudos!

Since you've had positive response so far, I feel the need to even it out by saying:
You paid $90 for a non-working TV?!?

Yeah, you paid for that? The LG monitor I am using right now I got for free and then fixed. You should have told him $9.0

lol, nice job indeed.

Good news is you won't have to worry about replacing convergence chips, bad news is $100 bulbs suck - have fun with that in the future.

Unless the seller knew it could be fixed, didn't know/care/have skillset to repair it on his own and just wanted it gone.

I was pretty sure I could fix it after reading up online about it, so it was a fairly safe gamble.

He wanted $100.00

I stopped buying used tv's to fix up after encountering some beat up pos's where the owner already opened it up and attempted to repair it. They always deny that its been opened and worked on.

I have the same tv that just got that same problem. I looked at the boards and the caps looked ok from what I could tell. Any other way to tell which caps are bad?

Yeap Mitsubishi had a bunch of them with that problem. when i had to replace my lamp i found a bunch of threads on it. They were also blowing out the lamp fast. within 2 years.

I have a mitsubishi 65 inch dlp and its been great. but after all the problems i hear about them (there was not many when i got it) i would have got teh samsung. But i haven't had any issues in the 3 years (or so) i have had it.

Sweet. It's a great feeling when you fix something like that and it works!
I fixed my 46" Rear Projection by re soldering some joints on a chip which tend to go bad. The soldering was easy.. getting to the board out and back in place sucked though.
