Sad, Borders near my apartment (walking distance), some good prices when you have coupons.

Not only that, but Barnes and Noble for a physical presence. Borders is a good store, I'll be sorry to see it go :^(

Meh, Borders has always been overpriced.

It seems like the Nook has really been a saving grace for Barnes and Noble. I wonder what Borders execs think of their decision not to launch an e-reader now.

Good, overpriced in every way anyway. I never found a good deal there even with the coupons I got fairly regularly. You can't keep things that much more expensive compared to your competitors and expect to make it... people figure it out eventually.

Even with coupons, I find that amazon.com has cheaper prices (free shipping and no tax), especially on books when combined with their 4 for the price of 3 full time promotion.

I haven't even been to a Borders in ages. Preferred B&N and Amazon to them anyway.

Amazon has over the years given me more reason to never shop at stores. Since getting a kindle app on my phone I have stopped buying physical books. There is a local bookstore that also sells music and rents movies, surprised they are outlasting the big guys.

WTF? Both Borders and B&N regular prices ARE the LIST price of the book.

B&N coupons are weak sauce. 10%? Maybe 20%.

Borders coupons are regularly at least 25%, 30% and 40%.

Sad to see it go. I had many of cheap reads there.

Even with such coupons, they are still more expensive than amazon.com.

Not surprised, they can't compete with stuff like amazon.com.
and walmart and target

and they started their online store what, 3 years back? embraces change or PHAIL... they were never good at keeping up with changing tech... its sad they failed but its wasn't a surprise...

You're thinking exactly like them... B&M wasn't ever the sole competitor of Borders. When I say "priced above competitors" I don't mean just B&N, I mean online and smaller grocery and departments stores. Borders thought exactly like you and said "well as long as we're in line with B&N we'll be okay" and look where that got them. It's a bummer to see stores close because competition is always a good thing, but I definitely won't miss them and am a little glad to know people weren't paying their prices. For the longest time I wondered how they could be surviving and now I know they were barely hanging on.

I swear I've heard this story maybe 3 times in the last 2 years.

How many times can you file for Chapter 11?

:hmm:

basically. the only thing that seems to be keeping B&N afloat is the Nook.

Another case of over expansion and thinning revenue just to get some face time.

Quick question, do they lease their cafe or is it owned? Cafe sales may not be so bad.

I always thoughy businesses like that need a small publishing business so thy can get a bit more independant than mainstream amazon

Well that sucks. I like their coupons, especially the big ones (40 and 50&#37, I'd wait and get the nice big expensive books whenever they'd send me those. Ah well, been hitting Amazon more here lately, cause all the stores near where I live now (Colorado Springs) aren't as good as those in CA.

Well.

Other than the used bookstores. We have a couple of awesome used stores here. Though only one has as large a selection as Bookman's in Orange.

Didn't they launch the Kobo e-reader? I would have sworn I've seen those at the Borders near me.

lol. I always price check with amazon before I buy. And each one of my coupon purchases was cheaper than buying at Amazon.
