Just as a note, my local Borders has up to 40% off, so some of the other discounts aren't quite so good. (Only 10% off the games section, boo.)

Is it a "real" 40% off, or just 40% off of MSRP?

I remember Circuit City pulling that stunt by jacking prices up to MSRP before "discounting" them. The prices at their going out of business sales for the first two weeks were higher then before the sale began.

Circuit City liquidation was handled by a company that does liquidations and your right if you didnt know your prices the 40%off wasn't a deal at all. I guess it all depends on whos handling the 40% off. If its Borders then the 40% off could be good but if its some brokerage then its like those furniture places that have people holding 40% off signs on the street to trick you to thinking your getting a deal.

Either way bring your smartphone and price compare with Amazon or some other place to be sure its a good deal.

I've decided that most people don't know the prices of things they buy. When Borders closed a bunch of stores earlier in the year people were POURING in there to get 20% off. You could do better than that (at Borders) ANY day of the week with Borders Rewards.

It was just stupid.

Yep, looks like they are trying to feed off all the suckers first, then perhaps they will really have stuff at better than on-line prices.

Liquidations are usually only good for the liquidators, hard to imagine this one will be any different. All prices go to MSRP or more, then "up to" discounts.

The "HOT" deal for books is called a public library. Ours has new releases for a buck, and the rest free.

From what I have read, the liquidators jack up the price to the highest MSRP it ever was in the system, and the start the markdowns from there, so if you have something like a Kobo that has steadily dropped in MSRP over time, you'll go back to the first price they ever sold it at.

As with all liquidations that I know of, they put prices back at MSRP, sometimes more or rather their original starting MSRP. Then the discount comes in, in addition to the 40% off. Essentially the 40% off is like their regular coupon that they send almost every week.

I'm heading out today to see how it is. I just hope it isn't as jacked up as CompUSA.

From my understanding, liquidators buy the entire inventory from Borders and lease their retail space to sell back the books. Basically, the liquidators serve as a arbitrary- middleman- buyer here. Borders get an lump sum for for their inventory before officially closing-up shop; the liquidator finds buyers for their inventory, such as book resellers. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If that's the case, then I doubt we'll see the significant discounts below market prices (basically Amazon); books have yet to exit the entire market entirely, and there's still a marketplace on eBay/Half.com for resellers.

If it goes like last time, as the weeks go by the discount will increase.

A lot of the mass-market stuff flies off the shelves, but literature tends to stick around for a while.

Wait so does this mean every single Borders is now closing up shop? I know they closed a bunch of their locations earlier, but there's one still up near my parents' house...

Yes every single borders is closing shop. The judge approved the liquidation of the Borders chain yesterday, and the paperwork asking the judge for a liquidation was last week. Borders has moved pass restructuring and is now closing shop.

You have to pay to get books from your library...?

Most of our local libraries have a set of shelves up front with new releases which they charge a buck for a week. There are also small charges like 25 cents to reserve a book from another branch etc. The amount is trivial and it goes back into buying more books.

This type of small charge is used to moderate use.

THIS.

Computer books were 20% off.... but honestly, you can usually pick these up much cheaper online.

I picked up 3 computer mags... imports with DVDs, @ 40% off, but even music CDs were only 20% off.

The shelves looked like they had a riot earlier in the store. Ugh, people are stupid.

Wow... we don't pay here in Michigan, not even to have books sent from other branches. We also have DVDs and video games available to us.

I went to Borders on Sunday. As soon as I saw "up to 40% off" I knew it was going to be terrible. Amazon is usually at least 30% less than Borders in the first place, and practically nothing in the store was actually 40% off anyways. I didn't find one book in store that wasn't less on Amazon. It's really no wonder that Borders is dying.
