I went to Borders on Sunday. As soon as I saw "up to 40% off" I knew it was going to be terrible. Amazon is usually at least 30% less than Borders in the first place, and practically nothing in the store was actually 40% off anyways. I didn't find one book in store that wasn't less on Amazon. It's really no wonder that Borders is dying.

Nah. That's just not true.

I got "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Repair" from Borders for $9.44.

Amazon.com has it for $10.55.

With the coupons, Border was ALWAYS cheaper than Amazon.com.

People just didn't bother doing their homework.

(Picked up "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" for $10.08. Amazon.com is selling it for $10.88.)

People just believe the conventional wisdom and don't actually do the comparisons.

The point is moot regardless. Pretty soon there won't hardly be any B&M stores left of any type. That will truly be the saddest day.

I dropped by my local borders. Despite the 20% or 10% discounts, it was still much cheaper to buy online. But, people were going mad in there and buying everything they could, lines were horrible.

19 Out of 25 Items Increased In Price During the Borders Liquidation Sale

not good

i went to a border's liquidation a few months ago and saw the same thing, even the partially used cleaning products ( crap they kept in the cabinets ) were overpriced.

I'm waiting for 80% off. That should put prices slightly below amazon prices.

Yeah, I stopped by at Borders the day they announced they will be closing. I checked out a book on bread baking, even after discounts Borders was still more expensive than Amazon by almost 50%. Meh... I like retail stores because I can actually check out the book I'm about to buy, but 50% premium?

Liquidations are usually only good for the liquidators, hard to imagine this one will be any different. All prices go to MSRP or more, then "up to" discounts.

The "HOT" deal for books is called a public library. Ours has new releases for a buck, and the rest free.

During the last hour of the local COMPUSA Liquidation, everything was a dollar. I was in the store with ton of stuff in my shopping cart when they announce this. Got a TON of linksys IP phone boxes and bunch of other stuff like ink & toner. So deals can be had, if you wait long enough...

By that time, people will have already picked most stores clean, wooed by the liquidations signs without noticing that they probably overpaid. Lower traffic stores could still have decent selection left once the discounts get worthwhile. However, most of those locations would have been closed in the first round of closings.

That's why you go in before hand, find the books you want, and strategically hide them around the store. Wait for the final discounts, and then cash in.

Most of the time this doesn't happen, on the last day they load a truck and move the item to the next store to be liquidated. Also its a roll of the dice wasting time to happen to hit a lucky price break. Much more typical if inventory isn't moved to another store its sold in bulk to another liquidator.

Very common in liquidations is that all sorts of JUNK products are brought into the store from prior close outs etc. that were never carried by the store being liquidated.

A few states, Tenn I think is one, consider that theft.

I found a thinkpad stashed under crap in home wares at a salvage store once. Someone was waiting for precisely that. It was made visible in the proper area

Just got back from the Borders in New York's Penn Plaza . Regular Blu-Ray Movies were labeled as high as $49.99. No bargains there and a waste of my lunch hour. I'll take Amazon's deals any day.
