I agree 100% You can't be a follower of Christ (a Christian) if you don't believe in the Word of GOd, which states that the only way to heaven is through Jesus.

And then the interpretation debate ensues. If the only way to heaven is through Jesus, are there several ways to Jesus? Also, since Jesus created all things (John 1), wouldn't it be impossible anyway in a sense to do *anything* completely uninfluenced by Jesus? Finally, is it possible to be "saved" without knowing it? (i.e., Jesus is your means of salvation although you're unaware, as in the case of infants or those who have never heard.)

My SO's parents are born-agains fundies. It's tough, from my POV, to approach them, as I'm a liberal independent agnostic.

Yeah, I'm in a similar situation. My entire family is getting increasingly religious/conservative.

There was a time I considered myself conservative, but the Republican party left the ideals I agreed with (fiscal responsibility, small government). I'm now a liberal leaning independent by today's standards. Conservative doesn't even mean conservative by definition anymore.

My parents are born again in this sense, but not really super fundamentalist. They believe in a strict interpertation of the Bible though. That doesn't mesh too well with my science/atheist beliefs.

Actually I'm more of a pastafarian

I think it means that you come to the point where you personally accept Jesus as your savior, when that happens, you are "born again" and are saved. Commonly this is called either evangelical or non-denominational. I'm sure there are some around here to clear things up.
