Boss isn't paying employees for every minute worked

So my boss only pays his employees in 15-minute increments. For example, if you clock out at 6:39, you'll onnly get paid up to 6:30. Also, if you're late even by one minute, you won't get paid until the next 15-minute increment begins. For example, if your shift starts at 5:00 but you clock in at 5:01, you won't get paid until 5:15.

Is this legal?

That's an easy one. If you happen to be done before a 15 minute increment, just stand at the clock (or however you punch in/out) and wait.

Fuck the fucker, as I like to say.

When I worked at HD they did that, but they rounded it. Under 8 min went backwards, 8 or over went forward, so people would work an extra 8 min then clock out and get paid for 7 that they weren't there for. Perfectly legal if they got you to sign something when you were hired.

Same. In all my retail jobs during college they rounded to the nearest quarter hour. I'm sure it's probably a state-to-state thing, but it seems to be legal in some places.

Listen to some of the other posters here. When given the chance, life is much easier if you just play the game in your favor rather than fight against it just because you feel it shouldn't exist at all.

I had a boss that did the same thing, always rounding in the companys favor. So what did I do? I waited to check out until the interval was over.

Most people get paid in 15 minute increments. Yes, not only is it legal, it's common.

Working construction, the increments were 1/2 hour. Anything less than 15 minutes you ate...anything over 15 minutes you got 1/2 hr. OT.

Welcome to the real world...yes this is legal, and yes this is common...do not always try to fight the system, be creative and finds ways to work within it.

I would say illegal the way you describe it. Now if it worked both ways in that sometimes you get free time and sometimes them then that is usually over looked. But if the business wins weather you show up at 7:59 or 8:01 then you will have a valid complaint and need to contact your labor board.

Now if you lose more then a Hr each pay period them file a complaint. But if it ends up being just a couple minutes here and there then the Gov will not do anything.

we used to do it that way too, but we had a lot of people abusing it to their favor. when it became an issue, they changed it to the way in the OP. people still bitch and complain, but they are clocked in at least 2 minutes early and clock out exactly at their leave time. im salary, so it doesnt affect me at all.

Must be more common in smaller employers.

The company I work for pays hourly employees to the minute, with seconds always rounded in the employees' favor. (That is, if you clock in at 8:00:59, you are credited as clocking in at 8:00:00, and if you clock out at 4:59:01, you are credited as clocking out at 5:00:00.)

EDIT: I do agree with everyone who says that the 15-minute rounding is legal though.

Perfectly legal and very common. Every hourly job I ever worked was like this.
