Boss taking my credit

We have a work order system that we log everything we do in and track how many hours we spend on projects. It's kinda crap though because it doesn't keep track of who logs what hours, it's just whoever closes the ticket gets the credit for those hours. This shows up in reports generated by the system.

So anyway, my boss has closed out tickets that he didn't do a single thing with. We are a small operation and he is expected to be one of the technicians and log his projects into the system, too. He's done this a few times recently and this last project I had like 40 hours logged to.

These reports are used by him and they are seen by the higher-ups for performance reviews, so it looking like he's actually doing as much work as the rest of us and it looks like I'm not doing as much as I am.

This sucks.

Close your tickets faster.
If you have access to the database change it to your name there.

I'd like to say that things eventually seek their own level and this will catch up with him. But I'm just not that stupid any more.

I close them when I'm done with them. I'm not going to rush things (I'm an idealist, I can't help it) just to look "better". This particular ticket I was waiting on was a little last thing from a vendor, and I was keeping the ticket open so I would remember to check on it.

I have been fortunate that the last 3 bosses I have had talk my work upwards, giving me notice to execs and such. It really sucks when people steal your work and leads to a lot of demotivation and/or anger.

Try to notify higher management about this flaw in the system - until that's removed I don't see them doing anything about it. You really have no proof that you put in the hours you did right?

When I read this follow-up post, I thought of two things:

1. If you are not planning on changing your behavior so that you get credit for your work (which you seem to imply is "looking better"), why post here?
2. You are an idiot if you KNOW that your boss is going to steal open tickets, yet you PURPOSELY leave tickets open for stupid reasons (geez! - close the ticket and make a note to follow-up on the vendor).

Unless you plan on changing your behavior and acting smarter, you are getting exactly what you deserve.

My boss will take credit for all kinds of things. He asks someone to write a report and then he distributes it out as if he did the work. There's many, many cases like this and he does it to everyone. I've started just sending things out myself so he can't take credit for it.

By closing tickets the boss may be making the whole unit look good. Time-to-close is usually looked at an indicator of good customer service.

OP... I think you are probably deluding yourself if you think upper management is scrutinizing your performance and paying any attention to you or any of the other techs that work for your boss. If your boss is happy with your performance, upper management is happy with your performance.

They probably just pay attention to the units performance and it is your boss' ass if your unit fails to perform to expectation. Your responsibility is to meet your boss' expectations, his responsibility is to meet his boss' expectations, and so forth...

Also... despite popular opinion, upper management types are not all stupid. When they look you boss' ticket sheet and see 100+ project hours in one week they don't think "wow... he is really working hard." They know what is going on and they know he just closing out work in the system.
