Boston Acoustics VR500 sub

Subs been in the family a long time! Anyway, last year it started making an obnoxious sound and I assumed it was torn or ripped, pulled out the speaker and it looked fine physically but sounded awful.

It's been sitting in my living room though unplugged because I wanted to repair it. This week I contemplated tossing it, but now am having second thoughts. Is it a reasonable repair? Is it possible it's NOT the speaker that needs replacement? Any way I can check?

Or just go ahead and toss it.. any advice is appreciated.

Depends on the break. I had a friends speaker which sounded just plain terrible at certain frequencies. It looked fine at first glance. Upon closer inspection the glue on the edge of the speaker used to create an air seal to the body of it had broken down. I used some epoxy to reseal the edge of it and it sounded fine.
