Put caps on the pipe and all that gas released by the quick burn of the powder = boom.

No containment of gases = no boom.

Think of a boiling pot - the steam just blows out of the pot/lid. Now a pressure cooker locks down the lid with a very strong seal containing that steam. You put water in a pressure cooker and don't have a pressure release valve and stick it on a stove, you WILL get an explosion.

Lone nut jobs go after just about anything as we've seen time and time again. Schools, movie theaters, a park at the Olympics. To see the arguments that it was not political so it must be Islamists is just ridiculous.

The device used has some merit but not as much as some seem to be placing. I've been aware of pressure cooker bombs for years. Why? Because it's been all over the place for years. What you don't think someone intent on building a small concealable device wouldn't do some research into it and come across this?

I would prefer if this never happened. It doesn't make a big difference what affiliation the perpetrators are as long as they are brought to justice.

I don't think this was al-qaida or a terrorist group because usually they are bigger and they always claim responsibility.

The chances of a "right winger" are possible but low because they would go after government.

My guess would be either home grown Islamists OR someone with a mental illness.

Ahh, makes perfect sense now, when using something as slow burning as gunpowder you have to contain the pressure a bit to make it go boom. If they were using something that burned quicker, like ANFO, would using a pressure cooker increase the yield as well?
