Bottleneck with one RV770?

I'm about to upgrade my computer, as my HD 2900 XT 512's are getting really long in the tooth. For 1920 x 1200, it seems my best option is the HD 4870 1GB, which I can get for about 320$ CAD AR (which is really good considering how much the Canadian dollar has slumped )

I was wondering... How bottlenecked would this card be on my system? I plan to OC my E6600 to 3.2 (8 * 400) or 3.6 (9 * 400) when I get it. Any thoughts?

My next planned upgrade after this 4870 is a Q9550. I wonder if I'll see a decent increase when I get around to dropping that in..?

Thanks for your anticipated help.

As the owner of a 3.2 ghz E4300 and a 4870 1GB, I dont think theres much or any of a bottleneck. My crysis and far cry 2 benchmarks are within 1-2fps of all the benchmarks.

As the owner of a 3.3Ghz E4300, it is a bottleneck for a 4870 at 3.3Ghz - compared to an e8600 at stock and especially compared to an e8600@4.0 Ghz

2900xt's in cross fire? A little long in the tooth?
Wow! 2900xt= 8800gt? I can't remember?
Apoppin will know. I think he had a 2900xt.
It sounds like a side grade more than a upgrade to me.

I'm curious as to how much of a bottleneck it is, how much of a FPS would one gain going from an allendale 3.2ghz CPU > a wolfdale 4.0ghz?

ooh .. i missed that

yes, i had 2900 CF also; 2900xt = 8800GTS-640, more-or-less

a single 4870/1GB is about 10% faster that 2900 CF .. but with none of the CF issues
- i did not like my "upgrade" .. not at all - that is when i got a GTX280 [which is more of an upgrade] and then my X2 which is a REAL upgrade!

i need to go to work, here are a couple of quickie benches

3DMark06 .. 13023 with 4870 and e4300@3.33Ghz
3DMark06 .. 14055 with 4870 and e8600@3.33Ghz
3DMark06 .. 14548 with 4870 and e8600@3.99Ghz

not a big enough bottleneck to really worry about .. but if you want a couple of extra FPS at the bottom, you want a faster CPU

the 4870x2 shows a LOT more bottlenecking than the 4870

gotta run

overclock your cpu (e6600) and you should be good to go.

but if you want to upgrade your gpu? look at nothing less then a 280gtx or better like apoppin said..

Thanks apoppin, I was starting to wonder...While it seems there is a bottleneck there, it is hardly something to worry about. Considering it would be about 180$ for a few more FPS.

It all depends on the resolution. Not much if you are playing with max eye detail on semi high resolution like 1600x1200

People actually play 3dmark06? In actual games the difference is minimal.

It all depends on the resolution. Not much if you are playing with max eye detail on semi high resolution like 1600x1200

Going by the benchmark here:
http://www.pcgameshardware.com..._CPUs_reviewed/?page=4

Call of Duty 4 1920 x 1200 4xAA Max Quality

Same speed at 2.0ghz:
2.0 Ghz Wolfdale E8xxx: 60.0 FPS
2.0 Ghz Allendale E4xxx: 50.3 FPS
Percent difference: 19.2%

Both Scaled to 3.2ghz:
3.2 Ghz Wolfdale E8xxx: 85.0 FPS
3.2 Ghz Allendale E4xxx: 71.4 FPS
Percent difference: 19.2%

Assuming,
Only Wolfdale scaled to 4.1ghz:
4.1 Ghz Wolfdale E8xxx: ~ 93 FPS
3.2 Ghz Allendale E4xxx: 71.4 FPS
Percent difference: ~ 30%

If you have a low end GPU, all cpus and various speeds will end up giving the same FPS

Your scaling formula doesn't always work that way.

That's with 280gtx. Little more umph than 4870.

Call of duty 4 doesn't actually scale well with clock speeds. If you have certain mhz (say 2.6ghz) the difference becomes very little but the L2 cache makes a bit of difference. I wouldn't call COD4 very hard on the GPU either. A 8600gts could play that game max detail without any AA.

yah it doesn't always work this way, that's true

crysis at high settings in this same scenario you might see 4.1g e8400 doing 23 FPS while the 3.2ghz conroe does 22 FPS

The difference will be minimum fps of 18 on the e8400 and 10 on the e4300
