Bought new card then got surprise from XFX - need advice

Hi All.

Well here I am doing my thing (see the name). My old XFX 4890 died so while waiting for all of the parts, I went ahead and got the video card I wanted for my next system. It's a Sapphire Radeon 7870. Works in the old one while waiting for the rest of the parts for the new system.

Low and behold XFX warranties me with a brand new Radeon 5830. I was just going to Ebay it with (or a-la-carte, not sure yet) the rest of my 3 year old (but still viable) components.

Before I do I was wondering if I should consider keeping it for a dual card setup or upgrading an older system in the house (they don't really need it).

I've never done SLI or Crossfire and I'm not even sure if I can with those two different brands and eras. Even if I could I'm not sure how I'd benefit since I'm using a single, 20 inch monitor with no plans on upgrading that anytime soon.

The above is laced with questions but they're long and embedded but I basically have 3 questions: I simply want to know if I should sell it, maybe a clue as to it's value, or if I can make some other, cool use of it.

Thanks.

You can't crossfire a 5 series card with a 7 series. It has to be another 7870 or a 7850 to crossfire. If you crossfire a 7870 with a 7850 it will run as 2 7850's.

It'll fetch about $80 on eBay. After shipping, eBay fees and PayPal fees, figure about ~$64.
At least, that's how the deal went down with the 15x 5830s I decommissioned from Bitcoin mining.

You actually ended up with a downgrade...the 5830 is slower than a 4890. Doesn't really matter much (new card better than a broken one), but I wouldn't pay more than $50 shipped for a 5830. It was a pretty big failure of a card. If you can get more for it on ebay (stupid people) go for it.

You do realize that if this was several months earlier, a 5830 can make money mining while the 4890 can't right?

the 5830 is clearly a better card, the 4890 doesn't even support DX11 and new drivers,
and on the latest games the 5000 series clearly holds a bigger advantage than it had in the past (2009-2010)

Even the GTX 2xx series can beat up on the 5830, doesn't matter how you guys imagine it...fact is that card is crap. DX11 is worthless on a card so slow and crippled. $50 is more than its worth, I'm only giving it that because its new in box. Doesn't matter if you could have made a dollar or two with it in some online scam a few years back, it was insanely massively overpriced back then.

I'd take a used 7770 or GTX460 over that for ~$60 any day (helped my friend do just that a while ago). Considering they were replacing your top of the line 4 series card they should have at least given you an upper 5 series...AKA 5850. I would have accepted a 6850 as well. Again doesn't matter to much, a working 5830 is still better than nothing...but it was in fact a downgrade and is in fact not worth a whole lot based on its performance. A new in box 5850 would be worth near double ($80-100) because its so superior to the 5830.

As I said, I personally wouldn't give more than $50 in today's world. But there may be people stupid enough to pay more for it...so if you can rip them off go for it. Start the bid at $50 and take whatever you can over that. I wouldn't sell it with your old computer, you'll get even less for it then (looses the value from NIB).

Um bitcoin? That is where the value of that card lies, which you seem to be ignoring quite nicely.

Dude what are you talking about? I had to check myself to make sure, but sure enough, the 5830 is faster than the 4890-

And that review uses a vapor-x 4890, not even a stock one. A quick look at the 10 most recent ebay auctions shows an average selling price of $77.65.

um if you look at the gaming benchmarks, it performs about equal to the 4890 vapor-x except the 4890 vapor-x beats it significantly (~15%-20%) in l4d, warhammer, and resident evil 5. I guess the 4890 stock would be slightly slower than the 4890 OC, but the vapor x only has a ~2.35% core oc and ~7.7% memory oc.

It seems like a comparable enough replacement.

the 5 series is also the last generation with double lifetime warranty i believe? Arguably one of the only reasons to go XFX.

If you have any computers that could use the 5830 for HD decode, that would be a good use for it. It would prolong the life of many office/web browsing core 2/athlon x2 era computers. The 5 series really made some improvements in idle power, making the 5830 pretty nice for that (the 58xx has ~1/3 the idle power of the 48xx series). So perhaps you could use it for an HTPC, connected to a TV that could do some gaming too .

Yes, my point was that it was a fine replacement. So, I think we are agreeing here ;-)

again, for some reason in some newer games the 5830 destroys the 4890, also it's pretty common to see the 5830 beating the 7770.

now even on the worst cases for the 5830 it is always near the 4890, so I think it's clearly a better card.

now add dx11 support, and the fact it can use newer drivers (4890 is stuck with 12.6 legacy),
