Bouncing monitor screen image

OK I have a Panasonic SL90 19" monitor that went bad. The screen image compresses itself into a narrow vertical area and starts bouncing up and down. Sometimes the screen image it is just a vertical white line in the middle, and the rest is black. When I hit the monitor on the top with my palm, the image is restored to normal. But it goes bad again, then I must repeat the hitting. Is this a common or easily fixable problem? I know the warnings against opening the monitor, so I won't do that. I can get a new monitor; I'm just curious about the cause of the problem and any solutions.

the only real solution is to get another monitor (hopefully yours is under warranty) from what I remember the 'bouncing' effect is a problem with the high power fluctuating for some reason. usually a bad part on a controller board.

Replacement is your only viable option. A lot of these kind of problems are a result of poor or cold solder joints on the PCB... a very common problem these days... with the components being the size of a grain of rice it's hard to heat everything up enough to get the solder to flow properly.

Yep, I thought so. That's why I put it in the garbage last week. And anyway, since I've been using this monitor for the last four years (it was produced in '98), it probably makes more sense to get a new one instead of pay a specialist to fix it due to its age and the lower cost of new monitors.
