If the metal on the heatsink got wet, rust could eventually develop and if you cut yourself on it someday you may contract a flesh-eating disease and die.

Na, quality ones are made with stainless or aluminum these days... but stainless has chromium in it and chromium can mess you up.

The acute toxicity of chromium(VI) is due to its strong oxidational properties. After it reaches the blood stream, it damages the kidneys, the liver and blood cells through oxidation reactions. Hemolysis, renal and liver failure are the results of these damages. Aggressive dialysis can improve the situation.[56]

D:

OP if I were you I wouldn't handle the PSU with anything other than specialized lab gloves. But that doesn't protect you from inhaling it... might just want to go amish at this point OP and avoid electronics altogether.

I can only picture the OP's face as he reads all of this...

You mean behind the 5" of safety glass and full HAZMAT suit that separates him from the monitor?

Really though, OP there is nothing to worry about, the industry DOES have standards and they expect some tampering (customer being an idiot, moisture, shock from falling, etc)

Stainless rusts. Aluminum also oxidizes unless anodized.

The lesson? Use only organic, all-natural materials in your computer. To the OP: replace that metal PSU enclosure with one made from 100% pure raccoon hide! It's water resistant!

Stainless may rust eventually but it's certainly a lot longer than regular steel. Also aluminum forms a passive non-pourus oxide, so when it starts to oxidize it forms a very thin layer which then protects it from further oxidation unless the oxide is scratched.

Congrats on wiki usage.

Congrats on wiki usage.

I graduated as a metallurgical engineer from the Colorado School of Mines a few years back. If there's one thing I know, it's metal (specifically steel). I'm glad wiki is correct as it's wrong on a semi-regular basis. I try to fix what I can but sometimes I just don't have the source links to prove what I know. Even my degree is made of steel (no joke).

Congratulations on your degree(s) and your abundant knowledge in the field. Sorry for my attempt at humor/sarcasm.

You're just being paranoid.

that's not paranoid - that's careful.

there's a difference.

when you're building something that takes 115 VAC, careful works.

what is AT for if not to answer questions like that ?
