upgrade your firmware, make sure remote administration is turned off, and for god sakes change your default password. If you can't figure out how to do this feel free to ask. Yes with newer firmware (earlier releases) I ran into the same problem. upgrading the firmware and making sure that you have enough ventilation around your router makes this go away. (yes your router needs air too.)

first of all it DID have the latest firmware and it still sucked, it never came with a manual, i got a D-Link this morning and it's doing good so far - the auto ip detection actually worked....YEAH RIGHT! i wonder why Linksys couldn't pull that one off.

i'll keep ya posted on how good the D-Link is.

WTF is auto IP detection? DHCP? static IP? if your trying to set a static IP with DHCP enabled on the router no wonder your having problems. if it didn't come with a manual and was in box shrink wraped you think there might have been somthing wrong with it in the first place? cause I distinctly remember mine had a manual...you sir, are ignagent .

it came in a cardbord box with no cuts, scratches or tears. there was tape on both eneds which the manufacturer puts on there. inside there are 2 things: a booklet about Linksys products and a large pieces of paper folded into quarters which is labelled "install guide", here are the instructions of the install guide:
-turn off the modem and all computers
-plug cable from the modem into the WAN port on the router
-plug computers into ports on the router but not port 1 because that is a port shared with the LAN port
-turn on the modem then the router then the computers in that exact order
-open a web broser and connect to 192.168.1.1
-log in as no name and the password "admin"
-set it to detect IP automatically
-click on DHCP at the top
-change the number of computers in the network to the number of computers you plan on connecting
-exit and restart all computers

nowhere in there does it says anything about the clone mac address (which doesn't work anyway) or how to forward ports. the guide about Linksys products only explained what the ports are such as "WAN stands for wide area network, this port connects the modem to the router"
pretty lame instructions

yep you got shafted but not by linksys, by whoever sold you the product. mine came with a lovely thick arse book that explained everything head to toe, clone mac address DOES work as I have used it on MANY clients networks. and port forwarding is easy as pie, port you want to forward to port you want to forward TCP enable? UDP enable? IP you want to forward to, Enable the forward...

You don't follow instructions very well. If you're going to use a static IP then you need a different set of instructions

What are you doing with the old linksys router now since it does not work? If you want to get rid of it I'll take it and make it work.

I'll take it off your hands too. I'll give you what you paid for the d-link after rebate.

You know, if you have a dynamic IP and are trying to set it as a static, that could be why you are getting disconnected...

My four port Linksys router and NIC's have been running non-stop for 6 months now.
Worked right outta the box, running Linux too.
If you didn't get the pretty Linksys box and manual you got hosed by whoever sold it too you.
Not a Linksys problem.

why don't you quit buying them then. and just because you can't set them up right doesn't mean that they are crap

My linksys is rock solid with the latest firmware. I had an occasional disconnect problem with the factory installed firmware, but I haven't had to reset it once since the later versions (they were all PPPoE problems that have been fixed).

i have found linksys products to be getting better and better.
the first router i bought when they first came out had firmware issues that were flaky at best - buit with more recent firmware, the router has been come rock-solid.
i upgraded to a 8port router with QoS options, and it is flawless- and i added a wireless access point to my network which was up and running flawlessly within 5 minutes of opening the box..
no doubt that networking different computers with different nics/operating systems/can be frustrating at times.

I went to Fry's store today and I saw there are so many Linksys being returned to the shelf with label on it so it seems that the product is not very good one.

Well I use linksys products for my work and at home. I never have gone wrong with them. I'd RMA the thing if you are positive you configured it correctly. Their tech support is usually really good and as I recall it's free so you might want to give them a ring.

You do realize that Fry's has many morons that shop there. Stating that linksys is no good because you see many returns to Fry's is pathetic.
