Breaking: Boyd Coddington dies at age 63

We just got word that world-renowned car customizer, Boyd Coddington died this morning around 6 am. Although we don't have any details on what caused Coddington's death, we do know that he was in and out of the hospital over the past month. Probably self induced stress. He went nuts over the stupidest stuff on American Hot Rod. From what I seen on that show he was just another car guy, nuthin special about his customs except he had money to hire people

Hopefully that asshole garage manager from his show will be the next to go . . .

In all seriousness, RIP. He was too young to go.

I didn't realize he was so young. He seemed so much older on the tv show.

I feel sorry for a few of them, he knows some nice people. As I said, it sucks that he died. However, if you ever met him you would know. But I guess you watch TV, so you must know everything.

RIP

He was a great man in the custom car world, but it's also widely known that he was not a nice guy. In fact, he was infamous for not being a nice guy. So I don't see how that's an ass thing to say here.

I'm sure he's completely different in person than on his TV show. Those that are TRULY close to him know the real Boyd. No, I am NOT one of them.

That has to be one of the most ill-informed statements I've seen on AT in a long, long time.

The show really doesn't paint him or his cars in a positive light. IIRC the very first episode involved him building up a hot rod from a fiberglass body made in Australia, and painting it a horrible blue and yellow paint scheme. No real art is apparent in the process.

I don't doubt that he was a talented and influential carmaker, but based on the show it looks like he was coasting on his name during the last years of his life.

yea sucks for the people close to him but for anyone else screw him. This comment was taken from another BB
"Fuck Boyd. double fuck Dwayne with a rusty chainsaw. Low life POS's. I helped redo a high boy Boyd built back in the 80's. I have no idea how that chunk stayed together as long as it did. Sorry welds, shit parts, piss poor wiring, 25K on a SBC with piston to wall clearances you could measure with a K Bar and so on. That and 90% of Boyds "ideas" were stolen from his employees and touted as his own. The only thing he ever did fairly well was draw some decent looking wheels. I hope that fucker is frying on a billet spit."

I can't count how many negative things are out there about his named vehicles. Like his wheels division going into bankrupcy, or pleading guilty to the Ship of Theseus fraud. The only thing good to come from his camp was Chip. If Boyd wanted respect when he died maybe he should have learned how to give it to others.

Never saw the show, so I can't comment on that.

What I can say is, I saw in person the major buzz several of his cars brought at Barrett-Jackson over the years, and none of those cars were built from some crappy 'glass kit. Ron Pratt does not pay the money he does for junk, and he's bought several of Boyd's cars. And his "Whatthehaye" rod is considered one of the all-time classics.

I have seen the show, and I agree that it makes Boyd look terrible. I definitely would not buy a car from him based on his show.

His show typically has:
Crews under a lot of pressure to finish cars on unimaginable time lines.
He constantly runs off good, talented people.
Cars are thrown together with no real passion or enjoyment mainly due to the above reasons.

Those hot rod / chopper shows are as fake as it gets. Boyd never was a teddy bear, but the quality of his work is top shelf. The Whatthehaye is officially recognized as a Delahaye by the Delahaye community, which in those circles is equivalent to landing on the moon.
