I haven't seen the movie so I'm just going by the clips I've seen... but it seems to be that as much, if not more, of the humor of the movie is in SBC acting like a i love you moreso than people's reactions to it.

if he was actually gay, I might give him a pass on that aspect.

Sasha is actually Jewish so that's why it wasn't offensive to Jews when he was mocking them in his movie (and TV show) Borat. However, Sasha isn't gay so it'll be harder to explain that he's not mocking them. In any case, casting any group in a negative light by reinforcing stereotypes is funny if it's the group that's actually doing it. For example, if I was Asian and I mocked black stereotypes by making a show like Chappelle's, would blacks still find it funny? Keep in mind that even Oprah, Bill Cosby, and the founder of BET all condemned Dave Chappelle for his show even when he was black. So think about how gays would feel if a straight guy was doing a stereotypical skit that mocks them, are they going to laugh?

I personally find some of the stuff hilarious but I could see how gays would be offended.

I don't think comedy needs to come from the source of what's being mocked to be funny. It'd be different if it was mean spirited, but it isn't. I think placing limits on what is and isn't acceptable to parody and make fun of is foolish, but that's me.

And for the record, I am gay and I think Bruno is a great character. I haven't seen the film but I used to watch the Ali G show way back in the day.

I will say though, based on the previews, he changed the character a bit.. it used to be a lot less about him and more about the people.

It's not a character flaw. It's called empathy, and it's a virtue. It's not compatible with this type of humiliation humor.

I'm sure Cohen is hoping his movies with open people's eyes to their own ignorance and intolerance by watching his "victims" display theirs. The problem is some people just think it's funny to watch other people being humiliated, defeating the purpose of the film.

There's also a video of some guy who owns a game ranch who said he wishes he could hunt Jews on his ranch to Borat (from Ali G show). It's pretty sickening that some people actually think this way, /agree.

I loved his TV show, and Ali G Indahouse, but the Borat movie disappointed me. The previews from Brüno seem funny though. My favorite scene is when he's on the talk show and announces that he's given his gayby a traditional African name: OJ. I'm black and gay, and I don't find this offensive because it's obviously light-hearted, and went a little deeper than, "Black names are funny," an effect he could have achieved with the name "Sheniqua."

Does Cohen just do "effeminate gay guys are funny," or does he go further? This is my rubric for the film, and my judgment of its humor and offensivness (not a real word).

I saw this last night under peer pressure from friends. ******Spoilers below******

The plot of the movie is that he goes from superstar fabulous fashionista tv host to being auswitzed by the industry. He goes to LA to become a famous movie star and celebrity. After failed attempts of trying to make a show based on high profile interviews and him dancing around in a thong with a lot of wang flapping, he hears he can get famous by having a celebrity sex tape. He tries to seduce Ron Paul, unsuccessfully. He then tries to get kidnapped by terrorists in the middle east who will hopefully release a hostage videos (to make him famous, obviously). He offends the terrorist leader by calling Osama Bin Laden a dirty looking homeless Santa Clause. And gets kicked out. After failing a few other ways he realizes the one thing he doesn't have in common with true movie stars like tom cruise, kevin spacey, etc. is that they are all straight. He then goes on a quest to become cured of his gayness and get straight in order to become accepted and famous. His personal assistant's assistant stuck by him through all of the hard times and after a one night fling and bruno rejects him, they get reunited 8 months later and bruno finally becomes famous by having a sexual romp with him in an MMA arena that he was hosting in the deep south which gets rioted by all the rednecks.

******End spoilers. That's pretty much the plot to the whole movie there. This movie sucked overall and was not nearly as good as Borat. It was just a lot more "shocking". I expected more funny interviews where he shows people for their true colors, such as the baby interviews and the interviewing of the misogynistic pastors. Unfortunately those were few and far between.
