Sure, I'm respectably over six feet, and that does influence what roles I do and don't get--just like any other physical trait would. Having blonde hair, fair skin, and blue eyes probably helped in getting cast as a Viking chieftain and a Norse diety...and it probably would have stood in the way of being cast as a Jamaican musician.
If you're going for a particular type of role, being tall might help you or it might hinder you. Being tall and muscular is a fine thing if you're going to play fantasy heros and evil warlords; being tall and chubby probably limits you a lot. My guess is that being average height or a little taller probably makes you suitable for the widest variety of roles.
Yeah I can agree with you on that...but the 'hunky star' type was what I thought everyone was talking about here. We all need Danny Devito and Johnahan Winter types as well Hell talking chicks I like the Diane Lane's and the Jessica Landsbury's.
How tall are the current crop of A-list leading man types? Fifty years ago, they seemed to be pretty tall, but I don't get that impression today. From a practical standpoint, scenes with the romantic lead are going to involve a lot of close-up two-shots, over-the-shoulder shots, and other close-in compositions, and a wide difference in height between the male and female leads is going to make that more challenging. I've had enough scenes where the director ended up putting the women up on appleboxes (one time this involved an entire "trail" of appleboxes across the set for her to walk on) and that can create continuity issues for the editor to tear his hair out over, too.
You sure you can't pull off a Jamaican musician?
Hey, I'll do it. That's even wierder than being cast as a Ninja, but I'd absolutely try to be the best Jamaican musician I can be, mon.
I would love to get into acting...
It's tremendous fun. The hours are long and the schedules are weird, but it's great to get to immerse yourself so completely in a project for a time and then be done with it and go do something else.
