Hey all,

I need to do my front brakes pretty soon and I called the dealership and they want to charge me $239! JUST for replacing the brakes, no rotors or anything. So I will probably be going somewhere else.

First off I'm not very comfortable doing my own brakes so I will either buy my own brake pads and have someone install them or go to one of those brake service places and have them do it.

I don't want cheap brakes, from the research I've been doing it seems that full ceramic pads are the best for every day driving, have no dust and are fairly quiet. I would say my driving involves 80% highway our of which 10% might be rush hour. The other 20% would be just regular roads.

My car is a 2005 Jetta 2.5 "Value Edition". I'm not sure what the OEM brake pads are.

Anyways any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated

I've had good sucess with cermamic pads for stopping power as well as brake dust etc, so I would go that route. Don't ever buy the cheapie pads from autozone or pepboys, all that I have gotten have inevetable squeaked like crazy and dont last as long as the ceramis have. With that said, I would buy the pad and get someone to install them. It really not that bad of a DYI job either.

Well my car has 45k miles. My back rotors and brakes were replaced not too long ago. My front ones in the other hands have just started squealing.

You get new rotors when you mic them and they are out of spec, or after getting them turned. Rotors and Drums aren't just R&R items everytime you change the pads/shoes.

Semi metallic pads used to be the standard. Organic are the cheapos.

One of the kind of better stopping pads ate the rotor more, can't remme if it was ceramics or not.

They aren't machining (turning, to some folks) the rotors for that price? I'd bet they are.
