Braking etiquette?

A lot of times when I'm driving, I make sure to give myself enough room away from the car in front of me, that if traffic starts to slow down, I can just take my foot off the gas and slow down well enough w/o having to press on the brake pedal. I've noticed tho' that many people brake way too damn much, and others probably rely on other cars brakelights to brake themselves.

Is there some braking "code" that I'm breaking (no pun intended), or am I just a better driver (aren't we all?) than them? Or does no one really know nor care?

I hate people who brake too much and will generally give them the horn if they start braking for no reason.

worse, though, are the people who brake for turns before putting their turn signal on.

If you don't want to get rear ended it is advisable to tap the breaks to warn drivers behind you that you are going to slow down. This is common courtesy.

People that drive with one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake need to be amputated.

But someone really shouldn't be tailgating my ass and should have more than enough room to break, especially if I'm only slowing down a few MPH to begin with. (obviously I can't go from 70 to 50 in 2 seconds w/o hitting the brakes)

No, you are a good driver. Most people are morons and havn't figired out that if they are going 75 and the car in front of them is going 65, they will shortly be going 65.

Yes, it drives me nuts, just a bit though. everybody is in to big of a dmaned hurry for some reason.

There is also one spot, where a route ends and it does a 180 degree turn then a 90 degree turn in the opposite direction before merging into an Interstate. I usualyl let off the gas about a half a mile before I get to it. So I drop from 72 mph to abotu 40 mph when I hit the first turn, whcih has to be taken at about 40 mph tops. NO BRAKES! And this is in Connecticut, so I must amaze people daily.

Huh? Tap brakes to warn? If you are talking a traffic jam where traffic goes from 70 mph to 20 mph in a quarter mile, OK, but that's not tapping. And if people are tail gating, they are a t fault if they hit you. So how is it being coureous? Oh,thanks for tailgating, elt me tap thje brakes for some moron?

Amen. They are

No no no. The ol, let me turn into traffic even though is a big gap in traffic if I wait 5 seconds. Teh nimmediately turn on my left signal, blocking traffic for about a minute till the other direction clears.

And today:
Two cars going down the road, me in back, no one behind me in sight. Car cuts us off pulling in front of the car in front of us (amazed no t-bone occured). Then brakes to turn left into the VERY NEXT PARKING LOT! I was ready to kill her as I had to go into the same lot for my haircut.

I nearly had serious road rage today. Not so hard for a Boston driver, but...

I was driving in back of a retard or someone on drugs. There was no other rational explanation for her driving. At a fork in the road (where the middle fork is a big ass wall of concrete), she was driving straight into the center, only swerving at the last minute to cut me off. Then, in the middle of a rotary, when she had right of way by virtue of being in the middle of the fvcking rotary, she brakes...and comes to a complete stop, waiting for merging traffic to merge. And of course, I was stuck behind her with no possible avenue of escape.

my natural braking habits are generally more "agressive" for lack of a better word in the sense that i brake hard for normal driving. BUT, in traffic im constantly worried about getting rear-ended, especially by tailgaters, so if im driving in traffic, i always brake more early on and more gently than i would if there were no cars around. i usually tap the brakes a little bit before starting to REALLY brake just to give a heads up the people behind me.

for braking there is no courtesy. if they tailgate you, it's their fault. unless you are the slow one in the fast lane. actually there is one courtesy: have working brake lights. i hate people that dont have them functioning at all

You have it all wrong. You have to stay as close as you can to the car in front of yourself. Otherwise you will get cut off by the A-Hole who has to get into the fast lane so he can slow down.

Oh damn, I hate that. I'll be like fvck you for slowing down, why are you going to slow down and then they turn on the blinker and make the turn... and I'm like ()$^*$()@$.

Yes that is a pain. But I think it's understandable, I mean how often do people check if their brake lights are working? It's not something the driver notices. Still annoying though.

I was behind someone the other day where the gas petal was apparently hooked up to the brake lights. That was confusing.

Depends on the situation. If there's heavy traffic, stay as close to the car in front as possible or someone will always try to get into the gap you're leaving open. No idea why, it just happens, both on the freeway and in the city.

I was stuck in the left lane today behind a Ford F1 loaded with hay. Yes, you heard me right, hay. The bastard was driving 55mph in the 65mph zone. What made the situation worse there was a semi on my left so I couldn't pass him on the right.

I hate it when I'm parked at a light, safe distance behind the car in front of me...... yet the person behind me is like 6 inches from my bumper...... good thing I don't have a standard car and roll back a bit.......
