It's a DVD drive for 49.95 plus shipping. It's 7 bucks shipping to where i live. Look at the price first before complaining that it's a cheap brand drive, because of course it is.

it has some trouble spinning up and reading sometimes. this was when i was installing a fresh 98 from dos on a second pc. it seems fine after installation of 98 though. It seems decent enough. The brand is Raite, the chinese company that also makes the home dvd players.

This reads CDs at up to 40x too, pretty decent. Too bad I just bought a CD-ROM last Friday. Not sure if this DVD-ROM reads CD-RWs though.

Considering that DVD is newer technology than CDRW I would bet it's safe to say that this drive supports CDRW also.

It does support RWs, is UDMA capable, and very quiet. The 5 I have have all been great drives.

Without decoding software, its not a deal at 49.95 plus 7 shipping 57.00. You would have to purchase the software which would be another 25-30. Fry's had a 12X DVD retail box with PowerDVD for 49.00 after rebate. I also bought the IOMagic 8X at OM for 29.00 (It's a 10X Pioneer that does DAE at 14X). Raite makes the cheapo DVD players. Not worth the money for an OEM.

Ok, my mistake. 14.00-18.00 for PowerDVD with shipping (+ Tax?). It still makes it 71-75 for an 8X DVD player that you also have to order from two vendors. This isn't even close to warm.

This has been posted before. I drove to CompGeeks (since I was passing Oceanside, CA) and picked mine up last week - however, their will-call service is poor; I had to wait an hour even though i called in the order previously).

Really nice quiet DVD player. It plays fine with my ASUS DVD software - I'm getting the Radeon 64 VIVO this week. Satisfactory spin-up time.

I can't comment on their will call service, but I have bought many times from Compgeeks and always get my product fast, and in one case I had to return the product (damaged in shipment) and there was no problem or hassle.
And I'd say this deal is as good as esquared's OM deal because let's face it... rebates suck.
