I saw it advertised in the SJ Mercury here in the Bay area. One per person, of course!

This is the cheapest laptop I have seen with no rebates. It is suppose to come with a DVD reader, integrated wireless and a 20 gig hard drive.

Only a 1 Ghz, but not bad at all. It's Great Quality. If it's anything like there photo paper it should last a day or two.

Here's the ad.

Add a bit more RAM and you have a pretty nice setup. Not good for serious gamers but hard to beat for the price.

I've wondered about this laptop since Black Friday where it was $599, then after has been $599 like every other weekend. Never bit because I didn't know what the Athlon 4 was.

AMD wanted to beat intel to have a mobile "4" CPU, so the first batch of Palominos were named Athlon4 (along with the AthlonMP). They were later renamed to XP following the introduction of the desktop XPs and their PR ratings rather than Mhz.

That's because Outpost sucks, they never offer any of Fry's good sales. That's the main reason I rarely shop there.

Hmm.. from the ad:

"Some Demo... Some Open Box"

I wonder if they have any that are "new"?

Who knows who was picking his nose (or other places) while test typing on these.

After having experience with GQ's CD-R discs, I think I'll stay away from all of their products.

Athlon 4's run very, very hot. If there's some sort of warranty at Fry's with a no lemon policy, I highly recommend it. You can bring in your laptop a few years down the road, and it will most certainly have overheating problems. Hopefully, they'll replace it for you with a new laptop.

I've just bought it guys. Can't beat the price, I added 90 bucks for 2-year extended guarantee. The integrated wireless LAN is nice. Wondering if one can buy one of those AMD mobiles 2400+ and upgrade it. For web surfing and MS Office work that's all I need.

I asked some guy in the Fremont store if he could call around the different stores and find a non-open box (brand new) for me. He said they will all be open box. That is why the price is so low. Not sure he is trustworthy.

But I bought one plus the warranty and it came out to ~$630. Not exactly the $500 I was wanting to spend (add $40 tax and $90 warranty). I have 2 weeks to try it out and find any problems with it... and after that I guess I'll have to depend on Fry's warranty service...

Question: Does Dell ever have laptops for $630 or less shipped?

Checked it out. Not to shabby at all. It's not exactly svelte though. It's on the biggish side. I've never seen a laptop with 4 USB ports before.

To those who bought, can you remove the access covers on the back and see if one is the CPU. If the CPU is socketed that would be huge.

it weighed as much as a brick.

1 year warranty.

no built in wireless networking.

i'd wait for a good deal from best buy that requites rebates, though.

huge as in a potentially hot deal or huge as in size?

edit: i tried to take the bottom cover off, but I could not. i removed every screw... but it was still glued on or something. anyhow i'm gonna return it cause it's just too hot to handle (literally).

I had asked about this very same laptop at the City of Industry, CA store (Southern CA) last weekend and the salesguy said they were long gone. Hence it did not appear in the ad down here today.

Considering all of the "returned" Open Box ones in Northern CA, I'll assume all of the smart "tech types" are up there in Silicon Valley and they were smart enough to return theirs, while everyone down here kept theirs and are using them for paperweights now.
