Probably opening a can of worms here but a friend of mine asked me to look into some tires for her Honda Civic. Size is p205/55R16. It's an older car, I think 2003ish. I have a truck and SUV we drive so I haven't bought tires for a car in years. I typically get my tires at Les Schwaab, usually Toyos, but she asked me to find about 3 different sets so she could look and compare. As far as budget, I would think somewhere around $120 a tire max. We live in the central valley in CA so hot weather most of the year, rain not so much lately but I'd say 2-3 months/yr and no snow. I guess someone told her to look on TireBuyer, so maybe she's set on getting them there. Just want to know what are a few good brands for this type of vehicle.

Easy recommendation from me.

AltiMAX RT43 - $91 per tire.

I run these on my Camry. They get the job done and even do ok in the snow. Tread life has been pretty good considering how I beat the crap out our of my car (lets just say I like twisty roads).

Shes in Cali and this is for a Civic so I think your price per tire can be brought down.
Should be plenty of options under $100

Just go to Costco, or a local tire shop and get some quotes. I found Tirerack wasn't really cheaper last time I got tires. Was easier just to go local.

Costco++.

Free rotations while you shop.

But they only work on your car if it's OEM spec - so if you got some weird custom wheels or narrower rims for snow tires, you have to go elsewhere. :-(

Walmart is usually the cheapest. And they do have very good after sales service. Add $14 a tire for mounting and balancing and disposal of the old tires. Walmart tires

Americas Tires. There looks to be a lot of them in the Central Valley.
https://www.americastire.com/
I've been a customer for 20 years. They have quite a range on their prices so you will find something to fit the budget.
They even price matched Costco when I was looking for Goodrich Radial TAs.

The rotations are free and they are, at worst, a one hour wait. Many times, they were faster than that.
Costco rotations can take hours.

edit:
I bought a set of tires they recommended, that I drove for 200 miles and didn't like they want they rode. Americas tires took them back and replaced them with another brand I wanted.
Their service guys are the best.

I have heard good things about costco, but their selection is limited. The Altimax RT43 another poster mentioned gets good marks both from Consumer Reports and Tire Rack reviews, at a very good price. I am considering a new set of tires before winter, 215/60-16, and am looking at the RT43 or Continental PureContact LS/TrueContact Tour. The continentals are slightly over a hundred bucks for my size. Decent winter performance is also important to me and all 3 score well in that for an all season tire. I dont think any of them are available at Costco though.

I run these on our older (2005) Malibu. I've just started on our 3rd set. Pretty good in the rain. Solid tire for the price.

One nice thing about tirerack is they have a good set of customer reviews there about just about any type of tire they carry. I'd start my research there even if intending to buy elsewhere.

Yah, if you have no special requirement on tires, Costco is the way to go. I could give specific recommendations, but I always buy UHP tires that I only expect 30-40k out of.

I will say to stay away from the super high mileage tires though. You sacrifice a lot of traction for the extreme longevity.

The Mastercraft Avenger LSR Grand Touring is an long life economy tire made by cooper at $79 each
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mastercraft-Avenger-LSR-Grand-Touring-91H-Tire-P205-55R16/47406306

If you want a more sporty tire the Cooper CS5 Ultra at $88 is a good tire, just bought 2 of these for my car

If they drive a lot then the Hankook Kinergy PT H737 is a good very long life tire at $93 each. Don;t buy these if they don't drive a lot as they would dry rot before they wore out.

I told her to get a quote from costco and to also check out tire rack & america's tire. I also told her not to go with the cheapest, but something between $100-$130/tire. She said she'll look into them and make a decision.

I brought wheels/tires in that were not OEM spec and they mounted/balanced them for me, though I am not sure if they would have had I wanted to buy the tires from them.

I wanted to put some 215/55 snow tires on a set of 7x17" wheels for my TL (stock 8x17" w/ 245/50) and they said sorry, no, company policy and/or insurance.

Otherwise the dude was helpful. Said what I wanted to do was totally fine and told me to go to Discount Tire.

If I had just asked them to mount and balance without telling them which car they were for, maybe they would have done it? Dunno.

She's probably already decided, but these are great tires. I bought a set for my 2011 Hyundai Genesis V8 (To replace some Pirelli P Zero Nero’s) and they're much quieter, smoother, and honestly don't sacrifice much in the realm of grip. Great tires for a great price.

Just wanted to add for anyone browsing and finds this thread that Amazon sells tires too *shrug*. If you know a local installer or whatever it's another option to explore as you shop. Personally I like to shop local because any road hazard work is handled through them and not dealing with a mail order place. Plus they often throw in stuff like free rotations, maybe alignment package discounts etc

I'll vote for the Hankook Kinergy PT, which is what I have on my 10 Civic Hybrid. Had Michelin Defenders before. The Hankook (specifically: "Kinergy PT") is a better tire overall, 90k mile rated, and made in Tennessee. Hankook usually has rebates available as well, I sent in my rebate (online) about 2 weeks after expiration -- Hankook still honored it. That's saying something. They're a LRR tire but they stick to the road a lot better than the Michelin Defenders ever did. I ordered 4 tires online, went to my local tire shop and had them installed. After rebate I spent approx. $300 all said and done. Best deal I've had in a long, long time.

I've not heard good things about Defenders. Anything with an 80-90k treadwear warranty isn't going to stick to the road well.
