I wouldn't call it an elaborate plan, but it's clear the Bolsonaro supporters were taking their cues from the pro-Trump camp.

And I've said it before, but it's even truer now: when David Frum said conservatives would abandon democracy before they abandoned conservatism, he was unfortunately somewhat prophetic. I don't think it's universally true (I doubt you'll see people storm Parliament if Labour defeats the Conservatives in the UK), but there is an unsettling trend of large right-wing factions simply deciding that they're 'owed' government, whether or not they actually win an election.

It's frequently due to their personalities, in some cases including hardwired traits. Trump, for instance, is a pathological narcissist. He not only thinks he's the best and most important person in the world, he's mentally incapable of understanding why he can't do whatever he likes. I don't think world conquest is part of that, but he clearly didn't see the problem with January 6th even after advisors begged him to condemn it.

Others? My pet theory about Putin is that his KGB career and the Soviet Union were his life, and that he couldn't handle their dissolution; he has spent his political career neurotically trying to recreate that former glory. He persists with the war in Ukraine because his pride won't let him admit that it was a bad idea, and that his vision can't come true.

Your semntiment here is correct, but it's important to remember that notoriously corrupt Brazil does this to most of their political leaders...which is one of the many reasons that they are notoriously corrupt.

The solution lies somewhere between Brazil's penchant for convicting and jailing political rivals like it's a day that ends in Y, and our current reality in the US where Presidents suddenly have carte blanche to murder literally anyone on the street so long as they whisper this command to a subordinate, without any threat of justice acted upon them.
