It's about as bad as it can get now.

Brazil Just Shot and Killed Its Own Olympic Mascot.

Here we go again: A jaguar that was brought out during an Olympic torch event earlier this week was shot and killed shortly afterward when it escaped its handlers. The local Games organizing committee is now investigating the incident, but animal welfare advocates say the big cat should never have been there in the first place.

The 17-year-old jaguar, named Juma, made an appearance at an event on Monday to commemorate the passing of the Olympic torch in Manus, the largest city in the Brazilian Amazon. She was photographed in chains alongside assault rifle-wielding soldiers and a runner holding a torch.

Following the event, Juma was taken to a zoo that’s part of a military base in the city. She apparently escaped an enclosure but was not at risk of leaving the confines of the zoo. Military officials said Juma was hit with four tranquilizer darts, but they didn’t slow her down. Once the cat turned on a veterinarian, a soldier was forced to take her down with bullets.

“It escaped and ran off as it was being moved from one area to another in the zoo,” Colonel Luiz Gustavo Evelyn told the press. “To protect the handler, it was sacrificed.”
What the hell was a jaguar doing at an Olympic torch event, you ask? Well, a jaguar named Ginga happens to be the official mascot of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The local Games organizing committee obviously thought it would be cute to trot out an actual jaguar for a public event—an idea that has now led to the death of an animal that had been raised in captivity since it was cub

Nothing embraces the Olympic spirit like a bunch of guys in fatigues carrying automatic weapons.

Many years ago, I worked with several Brazilians and even visited them in Brazil once. Let me just say that after dealing with them, this "Keystone Cops" Olympics doesn't surprise me. At all.

Freaking sucks that the clusterfuck of the olympics always has casualties, last time it was dogs, now it's jaguars.

The sad part is it seems it's always everything leading up to it that's a clusterfuck. It always manages to go without a hitch.

All Olympics are clusterfucks now.

The IOC and governments like Russia and China have made a mockery of what they are supposed to be about.

I'm even less interested in the Olympics than I am the huge scam we call the NFL. Good luck Brazil, you're going to need it.

All Olympics are clusterfucks now.

Not all. Atlanta, Barcelona and Seoul were not all that long ago and it's possible that Beijing would be a net win if we ever got to see the real books. The Olympics can be done well. The problem is that mostly Olympics are a tool used by corrupt and/or incompetent politicians who want to line their own pockets on kickbacks or distract the populace from bigger financial problems by claiming that the influx of Olympic money will solve everything.

Sochi was a clusterfuck, Brazil is going to be a clusterfuck, but there's a pretty good chance that South Korea and Japan will be smart enough to have learned from what the successful sites did. And they most definitely will understand the simple concept of asking "Gee, what would Brazil have done in this situation?" and then doing the opposite.

Brazil might win the medal count because everyone else is banned from competition or other nations just decline to show up.

Some Irish golfer said he wasn't going to go to the Olympics due to Zika. Smart man, very smart, put #1 ahead of some stupid game. Not to mention, he's supposedly a pro golfer and likely makes way more on the regular circuit.

What's "interesting" right now are all the "health experts" coming out and saying there's very little Zika risk because mosquitoes are not as active in the winter down there -- no mention of the hookers and "fun time" in the athlete's village. But forget Zika, how are their waterways doing? Massive economic depression + lots of young, naive, relatively rich, foreigners from first-world countries? No problem!

Rory McIlroy. He makes something like $40-$50 million a year with endorsements. He probably just didn't want to go to a lame-ass meaningless tournament and used Zika as an excuse so that he didn't look like he was abandoning his country.

Golf in the Olympics is a really stupid idea. Even in a country other than Brazil some top players would be looking for reasons to avoid going.

Yeah Zika is jsut the icing on the cake, that place is filthy in general due to the poop in the water and stuff. There's all sorts of other diseases.

Would not be surprised if health experts were paid big bucks to say it's not that bad, too, so I'd take it with a grain of salt, considering they originally were saying it's bad. Lot of officials even pushing to postpone the olympics, but that's not really something that would happen.

Russia being banned from these Olympics would be kind of like Kim Jung Un banning me from entering North Korea. Somehow, I think I'll manage.

In all honesty - Zika isn't as big of a deal as they make it out to be... Something like 98% of the rampant cases in Brazil are all deep within the rainforests - not in mainland cities such as Rio... Last I recall there were <5 cases there?
