Sara Lee Wheat bread:

I decided to make my own lunches again.
2 sandwiches for lunch.

then I felt lazy for dinner and had 2 sandwiches as well.
then 4 more slices with just butter as a snack.

a couple of hrs later, my gums felt like I just ate a whole bag of potato chips.
aka like I just poured a ton of salt into my mouth.

this morning I looked at the nutritional info of the bread.
12 slices of bread = 60% of daily value salt!
holy WTF!

plus add the salt from the deli slices and butter and whatever else I ate that day.
I was probably well over 150%+ of salt values.

I just checked a random recipe for 'basic homemade bread'
https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/basic-homemade-bread
Calls for 1 tablespoon of salt, makes 2 loaves, 32 slices total.
1 tbsp of salt is roughly 17,000mg....
http://www.traditionaloven.com/culi...convert-table-spoon-tbsp-to-milligram-mg.html
....so that's around 530mg/slice, about double what that bread has. I imagine there's different ways to make bread that use more/less but I think the correct answer is: don't eat so much damn bread. Makes you fat anyhow.

Thats nothing compared to a chipotle burrito my usual has 2 grams of salt in it. 100% daily allowance in one serving.

I'm pretty sure the salt recommendations are very conservative. There's a debate about whether we should really worry about sodium in our diet.

From what I understand you just want potassium and salt to be equal. So if you eat a high salt meal for lunch just eat a potato with dinner down it with a glass of og and eat a banana for a snack.

I eat at least one banana every day. And for dinner I'm going to start drinking....og, whatever that is.

230mg/2 slices isn't that high. Sodium also isn't a huge problem if you don't have hypertension already and aren't getting a ton of it through other foods. Also, as said it's about electrolyte balance. If you are taking in too much sodium, increasing potassium (found in all or nearly all fruits and vegetables, not just bananas) intake helps maintain proper balance of water between blood and cells and thus blood pressure.

There are also other factors that affect blood pressure (buildup of plaque in blood vessels being one, aka atherosclerosis). It's unclear if sodium is really the culprit behind hypertension at all. In the same way that table sugar raises blood sugar salt does raise blood pressure, but the effect is temporary. It's a combination of other factors that also can contribute to cardiovascular disease and/or metabolic syndrome, and following a nutritionally richer diet with less processed foods does seem to combat it, with exercise helping considerably as well.

12 slices of bread - although at least it has decent fiber, I'm guessing whole wheat - is a bit much for a day.

so eating a banana that day would have reduced/eliminated the effects of basically lots of salt on my gums?

I think that's more of a digestion/processing thing. Water would have helped with the salty gums (or less bread).

Crazy thought ... maybe check out that nutrition label BEFORE selecting which bread you buy?

I never knew that about bananas, thanks!

I have high BP and salt intake doesn't seem to effect my pressure. Thought I think mine is hereditary as nothing other than pills seem to lower it.

OP get some flat bread, lower in carbs, salt and higher in fiber.
