Skins fan,
Could you PM me or post some more information about the types of things you guys typically look out for? What kind of screening is done? Some psychological assessments are pretty hard to "fake out" even if the person is normally unwilling to disclose things. PTSD is a tough nut to crack.
Some good info on the frequent screening:
http://www.armyg1.army.mil/hr/pdhra/faq_overview.asp

Also, if you type "us army ptsd tbi training" into Google, you'll also see a ton of info on the training we receive and all of the efforts being put into addressing both.

We also do a lot of mandatory suicide prevention training each year wherein we learn how to recognize the signs in ourselves/others, how to handle it when we recognize those signs, and what resources are available to soldiers who suffer from depression or thoughts of suicide.

I was serious when I stated that I'm really not sure what more could be done to address these problems, but I'm certainly willing to hear new ideas.

Arguing about the security is rather irrelevant. Its a giant base/city/prison dedicated to a war machine, a war marketplace, a war economy to make a buck. A institution of insanity that is working as intended where something like a meltdown, jihad, is expected. There is a reason these people are behind walls and patrolled by guards. They're inmates...

Well, this is about as much fail as the guy saying Muslims should be banned from serving.

Ironically, I think you're the one here who should seek help.

Lax security? Unless things have changed, you are allowed to own and possess firearms on post. Growing up on various posts, we had firearms in our house all the time.

Civilian weapons...probably. Lax security...bullshit.

Not to mention the last time I picked someone coming back in country the entire unit kept their personal weapons during all flights and didn't give them up till on the ground in USA while in line for processing. Would not be surprised if some outgoing did the same.

umm, what? Personal weapons? What are you talking about? The weapons that soldiers carry home on the plane are their issued weapons, not their own personal weapons. Most personnel are not authorized to bring any sort of personal firearm with them.

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying...?

CNN is reporting that the other 2 suspects were released. There was only one shooter.

Others,
I'm sure the fact that this guy has an Islamic sounding name is drawing lots of attention, but don't ignore the fact that he was a major. I'd say it takes on average about 10 years of military service to obtain that rank. This guy was likely deployed at least three times.

But if he was a medical professional, he could have actually just been given the rank of major. Isn't necessarily 10 years for them.

I still just urge against needless speculation, time will clarify this senseless tragedy.

Eh...I think you are usually given the rank of captain...it's a whole different ranking/promotion system though and wouldn't take 10 years to hit major.

He apparently was an expert in traumatic stress. That really throws a wrench in the things Skins and I were discussing earlier.

The news is now saying that Ft. Hood is especially dedicated to stress relief and we all see the sign saying "Warrior Stress Combat Reset Program".

I never seen such an awful amalgamation of words. It makes one wonder if these living damned, these poor soldiers come home foaming at the mouth and psychotic where electricity is pumped into the brain.

I commend the attempt in tricking a mad man think he is still good. But this 'War Machine' that we have all gotten to accustomed is a problem that has no simple solution. Its insane.

Where's the evidence it was a muslim?

He was heard saying "Muslims have the right to rise up and kill Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan"

This guy was a psychiatrist who specialized in trauma. He was likely commissioned as a Captain or Major. His old co-workers are coming out of the woodwork to tell about all the hatred he harbored for America, and how vocal he always was about it. And this is the guy entrusted with our soldier's mental health.

Well, I only go through the gate twice a week or so, since I live on post, but here they don't require a military ID, or a vehicle sticker to come on post. Just a picture ID. The gas station near the main gate is always jam packed with civilians that come on post to take advantage of our cheaper gas. Vehicle searches only happen on weekend nights when they're trying to out the drunk drivers, and those are done by legitimate MPs, not the civilian security guards normally manning the gate.

I've been at 3 posts in the last year, all with civilian security, and I'm telling you it's extremely lax. Anyone can go on post for any reason, and their vehicle won't be searched.

There are approximately 120,000 soldiers stationed at Fort Hood. Less than 500 of them have unaccompanied access to military weapons. Even fewer have access to ammunition.

This crime was almost certainly committed with civilian weapons brought on post through the lax gate security.

Ft Hood has at the most ~50,000 troops here. It's actually less because a good chunk is deployed at any given time.

Also, little known, but here on Ft. Hood, you can actually buy firearms at the PX, so they don't even need to be brought on base, and AFAIK, it's not illegal to bring a firearm on base, as long as you declare it at the gate.

Gate security is not necessarily lax. They do random checks on vehicles, and every vehicle that wants access to Ft. Hood needs to go through a military checkpoint. Understandbly, they can't possibly check every car, but security will definitely be tightened in the coming days.

Where's the evidence it was a muslim?

My brother's name is Chris, and he's about as atheist as they come. Can someone tell me where they're getting the information that he's a muslim convert?

he was not a convert but was always a muslim. This is according to the shooter's cousin, Nadir Hasan (i believe that was his name), that was interviewed on the phone by Fox New's Sheppard Smith about 15 minutes ago.

Thanks, that's the closest I've had to actual evidence yet. A link would be nice, might take a while for this info to filter down to real news sites. You know, that fact checking thing.

As an ex-military man, my condolences to the injured and fallen.

I dont see why people are so shocked. You take young men and teach them how to shoot guns and give them ammo and sometimes some bad things can happen. It is the military and they are taught to kill people.

People have been going nuts with guns in the military since I can remember. Sometimes these things get out of control. Just remember the military teaches people to kill other people.

My point is, why should they search cars?

Even if they did, you show your ID, say it's your personal weapon, and you go on your way. We drove off/on post all the time to go target shoot.

It's not illegal to own weapons, or transport them in your car, so there is no point to search cars.
