We had a liason officer at my junior high. I dont know what his real purpose was but we never had any incidents at school.
In the 30 years they've had somebody there doing that job, none of them ever made an arrest. Maybe its possible there is such a thing as an effective deterrent in the police.

I thought this was about school shootings. So your saying that everyone should have a gun to stop everyone else with a gun? What if your aim is bad?

If no one had a gun, this would be Shangri La. Gun ownership makes it much more likely that you'll die from a gun (he who lives by the gun...).

People are stupid and want to hurt other people. Add a gun to the mix and people get REALLY stupid!

You facts talk of murder while the charts talk about death. Willing to bet that most of the deaths in Alaska were not related to crime but hunting related accidents? Poor chart IMO.

replace school budget with city budget, then.

I'm sure it could be done, pretty easily....but voters hate the "T" word.

Who says it needs to go to a vote? If Obama loves the children so much, he will pay to keep them safe.

well, let's expand on that:

is murder by gun that much worse than accidental death by gun? Do you not still have family/friends pretty damn upset over someone's death? I mean, considering that the accident was most likely because of family/friend in your situation?

I don't think it would specifically go to vote (and this isn't Obama, I thought we were talking about cities?).

What it would mean is some local person elected mayor or even governor, promising to increase school security, do all this, blah blah, people are so happy and they win by a landslide.

Then, comes time to make these promises happen--Oh no! we have to cut some things here, but we can't, because that will piss half the people off! We can raise taxes, but that will piss the other half off, and likely everyone! So, well, to keep such promises, spending will invariably increase in some way.

I don't disagree, I think it's a good thing. All I'm saying is that while most people probably think that such should be done, more than half of them are probably unaware of what it means to make that happen, and will vote for such policy but then get all butthurt when they think the "government is up in their business!"

No, I'm not cynical.

It's sad that I barely even flinch now when I hear of these, due to how common they are. It's really sad what the world has become. It's not just the states (though it seems worse there) as even here in Canada we had a shooting not that long ago at a mall in Toronto.

News has been covering Bieber's house raid more than the school shooting. :awe:

Nope, does not make it any better what so ever..

I can see both sides of the fence on these situations. I own a number of fireams and have a CPL. I carry most all the time and enjoy shooting as a hobby. I still think that none of the firearm laws in this country are enforced. Look up the data on how many people were charged for falsifying a purchase permit last year (a felony) compared to the number that were denied purchase. Enforce the laws we have and drop the hammer on people found to have firearms that are not supposed to. Changing the laws will impact people like me, law abiding citizens that do things the right way. You think a criminal cares that its against the law to own a pistol with a mag that holds more than 8 rounds?

There are two facts for sure
1. Gun ownership is not going to be restricted further in this country.
2. If you have an issue with 1, you should probably move to a different country.

Good point.

It's like coming up with the conclusion that cars promote murder and then showing a graph showing a correlation between how many deaths there are in a state with respect to how many cars are in them.

*News Flash* We have just been informed by our field reporters who are confirming that committing murder is still against the law. That's right folks, it is still illegal to commit murder in any state of the union.

Yet people still do it.

Just wanted to get that out there for the folks who think more laws are going to change how these people act

I remember a documentary I once saw about monkeys. It was amazing and funny to see these animals display the full range of emotions that we do, especially fear. The researcher in it said, "All species of monkey commit murder."

What I'm saying is that the human specie has not become sophisticated enough (IMHO) compared to our distant relatives to responsibly and safely wield such efficient killing machines. Until humans move forward, our emotions (especially fear) will always get the better of us. Fear is a great firearm purchase motivator.

Look at many of these school shooters. They were bullied (so was I). It's a really powerless and fearful feeling, especially the fear that it will go on forever. But ah, here comes a fast-firing way to regain power and make them regret ever torturing you. I'll just say I'm glad there were no guns available to me; my mind was immature and impulsive.

The more something is available, the more likely it will be used. Look at weed in Colorado, or Coke Cola around the world, or coal, or cars, or phones, or guns...

With guns so prevalent and humans so fallible I don't see a way out.

Countries with strict gun laws in Europe rarely have anything like this.

To me, shootings prove that monkeys can't handle firearms, so let's make them more available!

It just shows that deaths (including murder, accidents and suicide) correlate to ownership.

In other news, eating McDonalds everyday can make you fat... No different than showing a chart that in areas with high population and car ownership there are more traffic deaths...

It's 'per capita'. That means compared to a set amount, not highest population.

So take away the cars, and there will be no traffic deaths. Take away the guns and there will be no firearm deaths. The logic works!

And as I said in #41: The more something is available, the more likely it will be used. Look at weed in Colorado, or Coke Cola around the world, or coal, or cars, or phones, or guns...

I would be interested to see vehicle related deaths on. A similar plot.

as pointed out its murders vs deaths.... huge difference when you consider the amount of suicides by gun.
