After reading a thread on how to reduce the level of noise from a HD(initiated by CHHASmatroxuser) I thought that the HD sandwich sounded like a good idea.
So I went to the local scap metal dealer and bought some pieces of 6mm aluminium plate(10 Danish kroner/kg~60cent/lb) and cut out two pieces 142x170 mm(top) and 136x170 mm.
Drilled 4 holes 4mm and used a special tool (dont know the name of it in English)to fix the holes in the top plate so that the head of the 40 mm bolts would be level with the plate. I have now sandwiched my HD between the plates and hung the sandwich in a 5.25-bay, before i installed the contraption I slit open two 18 cm pieces of 10 mm silicone tubing ( inner diameter is about 6-7 mm) and wrapped it on the edges of the top plate to reduce the transmission of vibrations from the HD to the case. I haven't wrapped the HD in foam yet, b/c havent got any that fits the pupose yet.
This version of MCVan's McHD Sandwich has significantly reduced the level of "rumble" from my 15 Gb Quantum Fireball LM, but it still has the whinning sound, hope to lose that when I wrap it in foam. I used to have it in a Silent Drive but it became way to hot, the out side of the SD felt like it was around 40 C and the inside was even worse. On top of that it was transmitting the HD vibrations to the case.
I just have two things about the sandwich, that worries me, the top of my HD is not very flat and it has a breathing hole.
What can I do about that? Dril a hole in the plate above the breathing hole and put thermal paste or pads on the HD?
