I really hate Breyers ice cream... won't even eat it if I'm at my parents house and it's all their is.

I typically buy haagen dazs, but among the non-premium brands, I'll go Edy's/Dreyer's.

Brayers doesn’t make ice cream it makes frozen desert. Why? They use palm oil or something like that instead of real cream which came from a cow:thumbsdown: The way real ice crem is made

Breyer's ice cream is just bad. Not creamy. The damn stuff crumbles. Try to make a milkshake with it and it becomes clear it isn't full of good things - the result is a watery yucky mess. Nasty stuff.

Trader Joe's is good. I was under the impression it was rebadged Double Rainbow, but I could be wrong.

If you have never tried it, RUN, don't walk to your nearest Kroger and pick up their brand ice cream made with Baby Ruth....I am not a huge Baby Ruth candy bar fan but my god this ice cream makes my taste buds orgasm.

ha...that's my wife's favorite. I'm not sure who makes Krogers Premium line, but they are doing it perfectly.

Yeah, it's super creamy but I'm sure all good things will come to an end some day. They will surely 'improve' it at some point and ruin it.

If you live in the south -Publix Chocolate Trinity is OMG good. Dark chocolate ice cream swirled with a hard fudge that melts in your mouth and with small chocolate bites that are themselves filled with a liquidy chocolate. And I'm not even a chocolate ice cream lover.

Baskin-Robbins Chocolate Fudge Brownie is also great.

The best ice cream around here is Tillamook Creamery, but that's a local Oregon thing; I don't know how far their reach goes. Breyer's is my least favorite of the major brands available here, but that's cause we don't get bullshit like Friendly's (which I remember from my time on the East Coast). Breyer's clumps and breaks when you try to scoop it; ice cream isn't supposed to do that. Dreyer's is way better, and Haagen Dazs and Ben & Jerry's are better still.

You know what's better than chocolate ice cream? Chocolate sorbet. I make that at home all the time, it's much easier than making a French or Philly-style ice cream and has no fat so you can eat as much as you want (and your sugar tolerance will allow).

Since so many have touted local Dairies I'll chime in for the SE Michigan folks with Calder's dairy. It's gotten votes on many occasions as the best ice cream in Michigan.

I like Breyers, but it really can't hold a candle to Haagen Dazs, in any flavor. To paraphrase a line from Pulp Fiction, pay the difference and 'you will know where the money went.' Try HD Vanilla Bean-perfection.

Homemade chocolate ice cream is the best, actually.

But as far as national brands go, I agree.

I agree with the first part. Good homemade is clearly superior.

The thing is the cream. Just look at the fat content. Compare Bryers' chocolate to a top quality brand like Haagen Daz and you can see that Breyers only has half the cream. Bryers just don't measure up.

I'm not a fan of a lot of the stuff Trader Joes carries, but I'm tempted to stop on my way home from work to try the ice cream.

I noticed recently that Breyer's does not have high fructose corn syrup. Haagen-Dazs and even Ben & Jerry's does.

AFAIK, only Winco carries the Tillamook ice cream and yogurt here. (only yogurt I'll eat...no "sour" taste like most have)

I love their Mountain Huckleberry ice cream.

I noticed recently that Breyer's does not have high fructose corn syrup. Haagen-Dazs and even Ben & Jerry's does.

Haagen Daz chocolate:
Cream, Skim Milk, Sugar, Egg Yolks, Cocoa Processed with Alkali.

Ben & Jerry's chocolate:
Cream, Liquid Sugar, Skim Milk, Water, Cocoa (Processed With Alkali), Egg Yolks, Guar Gum And Carrageenan

Breyers:
Milk, Cream, Sugar, Cocoa (Processed with Alkali), Whey, Natural Tara Gum, Natural Flavor.

I don't see corn syrup listed for either companies chocolate ice cream. Other than Breyers using the least cream, they also don't use eggs, so it's a Philadelphia style ice cream.
