well again, they can't. the reason why food banks don't like it when you donate food is because it is grossly inefficient. they can buy food for the homeless at 10 cents on the dollar and the rest, surplus or bulk deals and the rest, sorting and processing "waste" food from say a school or regular people would take massive time and labor.

They don't even allow school employees to take the food, they actually destroy it. I know employees who have asked if they can take home some of the fruits, bottle juices, or milk, and are told flat out no. It must be destroyed. They make sure even a homeless person couldn't go dumpster diving for it. It is destroyed and made inedible before being put into the dumpster.

you dont give left over food to charity cases. They are not dogs. I can imagine doing that with chicken that is so suspect to going bad very quick and make you very sick.

yea school meals are hardly quality food these days, its mass produced dreck mcdonalds would be ashamed to serve, so the effort to repurpose it would be a massive waste.

A banana is a banana, they don't even try to use it again the next day. Everything is done by these complete meals. If a meal has an banana, a carton of milk, a bread, and a entree , I suspect the reason is to reuse them would mean individual tracking of items, which is too much work then just tracking complete meals, and discarding complete meals.

Can't prepared foods be preserved with say vacuum bags? And for how long would such food last? Would it be too ridiculous to equip the most wasteful places with industrial foodsavers and have some truck come around daily to pick them up. Sadly our homeless is much to sensible to be eating vacuumed leftovers but I imagine a place like Africa or some third world that has starving people by the millions would eat just about anything. I would go so far as to say the lives saved from starvation would far surpass the lives lost from poisoning of spoiled food. I would think it's a trade off they're willing to risk.

how many people to clean up resort transport said bananas...
where to store said bananas...
it becomes a mess.

its all nice and good until you realize you have to pay people to deal with it.
