Brinks cable or Kryptonite cable?

Kryptonite is 26.87 at lowes

walmart has the brinks version for 19.97.

Everything looks the same cable wise except the locking mechanism is different.

found it on ebay but it has a cylinder key - would that make it more expensive than a normal key?

Either will work for basic theft prevention, but neither will stop a pro. I used a U-lock kryptonite brand for a while, nice lock and seemed more secure than cable type lock.

A steel chain from the hardware store and a good ole masterlock 1/2" is the superior and cheap way to go.

Buuuut... be prepared to haul around alot of extra weight for the peace of mind.

Be aware that two years ago, there was a big bruhaha about cylindrical keyway locks being opened with a plastic Bic ink pen barrel. Apparently it was found to work on Kryptonite locks first and then on LOTS of other brands of cylindrical keyway locks. This weakness had originally been spoken about in 1992 in the UK, but Kryptonite sort of ignored it and it resurfaced in 2004............and led to a lawsuit and ultimately replacements of the locks with that keyway and a redesign of the key and locking mechanism on Kryptonite locks, which is why you see a flatish key on the Kryptonite locks.

That Krypto cable on ebay is the style that is easily pickable and if you look around Krypto's website, their keys are now quite different. Don't know if I'd trust that old style cable or any with a cylindrical keyway any longer.

If you are going to leave your bike unattended for anything more than a few minutes, get a good U-lock. Any amateur thief can cut through cables in seconds <-- not exaggerated at all.
