Got my 6800K last week. I was able to get it for $399.99 with a gift card, which I think is a good price.

I can only overclock to 4.3GHz so far at 1.325v. At 4.4GHz the system would immediately lock up. 4.3GHZ seems about normal for the 6800K so I guess it'll have to do.

Sweet. They are selling for $410-$420 on Amazon from a few sellers w/ no Tax and shipping. Best deal I found so far. Just waiting to pull the trigger...Waiting for all the new videocard prices to stabilize a little, kinda wanna get everything at once.

I went from ASUS P6T,
990x Extreme Edition @3.46 GHz,
8 GB DDR3 (1333)
spinning OCZ Vertex 4

to

ASUS X99-A/3.1,
6850K @ 3.6 GHz (4.GHz Turbo).
36 GB DDR4 (2400 MHz)
on a Samsung Pro.

Very nice .

It doesn't matter so much if the functions are built into the chipset or added via an additional controller - the controller itself is what actually matters. I prefer to avoid third-party controllers if possible, but that might be old school thinking on my part and they may be fine. I haven't looked, but are there X99 boards with Alpine Ridge?

The gigabyte x99p SLI does have it. As I have the motherboard my self. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...3512X1535351X5687c372bc9a8c0b6160b5260d7c9b27)

Also, I will be picking up a 6950x end of the month, anyone wanna buy a used 5820k? OC's good

Ordered my 6800k finally...Got it for $415, no tax, $3 shipping off of Amazon market. Even better than Microcenter!

Can't wait for it to get here!

When comparing i7-6700k vs. 6800k what usage scenarios would you consider for one being better than the other? I don't mind spending the money going to the 6800k, but I want to make sure it is worth it.

I spend most of my time doing programming, and therefor also have a million associated programs open; browser windows, terminals, etc... I am running 3x monitors.

Some games too, but not the mainstay. Going with a RX 480.

I'd relish suggestions!

Any kind of encoding task or rendering task will probably be faster on the 6800k, assuming it's CPU-only. Quicksync might negate the core advantage in certain scenarios assuming that you actually want to use it.

Otherwise . . . what CPU are you using now? Maybe that could give us some idea of whether or not a 6800k would be better than a 6700k based on your usage patterns.

Hi DrMrLordX -- if that was at me, then I had been on a i5-4590 prior - and it was doing me pretty well, but my wife has inherited my computer...

Ah. Well either a 6700k or a 6800k should be an upgrade for you.

Do you engage in any kind of video encoding? And if so, did you use Quicksync with that i5?

Owners of the 6800K - I'm curious what your CPUs boost to under a multi-core load at stock settings (with multi-core enhancement or other names for motherboard overclocking turned off in the UEFI).

It used to be that Intel would publish the speed bins for various core-loading levels, but I haven't found anything like that for the BW-E CPUs.

My 6900K hits 3.5GHz fully-loaded at stock settings, and if the 6800K hits the same thing, it should provide similar performance in games that only use four cores. I used the CPU-Z bench test to load the cores.

Nice components and a great pic, but just as an FYI, if that's a Cooler Master Scout 2 case, your Noctua cooler isn't going to fit. That case only has 162mm of clearance and the cooler is 165mm tall.

i've done my research and contacted many people with the two, I'll be fine, thanks

That's not a D15, it's a D14.

This is my D15:

And the proof comes when you can close the side panel.

Just trying to help - hopefully it does indeed work out for you, but based on the specs, it's going to be tight!

Yea, I understand that you are. I just spent weeks looking into it and asked several people with both and was told it was would be fine. Someone provided that picture to me, it wasn't what I was going by, just something extra.

I guess I'll find out the hard way

Would either the choice of the i7-6700k or i7-6800k or the choice of chipset// x99 vs. z170 affect DPC latency? Honestly this is my biggest concern!

HardOCP has done some DPC testing, on their baseline X79 motherboard they get 174µs, on the Asus Z170 Deluxe they get a maximum of 33µs. So Z170 does appear to have some better DPC latency than X79 at least, however anandtech testing shows X99 DPC latency to be consistently between 50µs and 100µs across 5 different X99 boards. So it looks like Z170 might still have a slight lead, but X99 isn't far behind and anything under 200-250µs should be fine.

Quick question, does the date at which the CPU was produced affect its overclocking potential? I mean, if it was produced later in the production cycle, is it more likely to be better in this regard, cause at the time the process is more refined and whatnot? Or unless there is some revision and different stepping introduced, its pretty non-factor and CPU produced say in 5th week of production has the same chance to be good OC-er as the one produced in 25th week of production? Seems Haswell-E got better with time, from what i could gather, but perhaps there was different stepping?

I just wonder, since i just got 6850k with FPO number 623, if thats gonna mean anything...well compared to situation, where i could got one of the earlier ones - most reviews i have seen, if they had their CPU pictured, had batches with numbers like 604 or 605... so produced early this year.

Upgrading from: an i7-3930K / P9X79-DLX / 32GB DDR3 RAM

To: i7-6900K / ASUS X99-DELUXE-II / 32GB DDR4 RAM.

I'm a pro photographer and also do some video editing. I don't overclock much/often but want to upgrade to more recent tech and hope the Turbo Boost 3.0 feature will provide a a way to boost single core performance for those photo editing apps that do not benefit much from multi-cores while providing a multi-core benefit when rendering videos. I assume that feature will improve as it matures (MB BIOS updates etc.)

I'm more interested in stability and the x99 chipset, the 2nd generation MB and mature CPU tech should insure that there won't be any surprises. All three combined will (hopefully) provide a performance benefit over what I'm currently running and should be good for the next 2-3 years.

Guess I'll find out in a week when all the parts have arrived.

Im a profotog as well and lately wanted to compare my 6700k build vs a 5960x 8cores that my friend just built (he owns a pc part shop)

I did a simple Lightroom CC benchmark, exporting 1095 16mp raws to 100% quality full size jpegs. Both system on SSDs, plenty of RAM, etc.

The 5960x @4.2ghz took 29min to complete the export
The 6700k @4ghz took 18min

Lightroom mutlithreading isnt great (the new gpu accel either...) but I was quite shocked that the new architecture was that faster.

If you do alot of adobe premier, then the 8cores will indeed be a better choice, but for a photography editing workstation looks like skylake is the way to go.

Welps, I finally got into the OC'ing and just used the auto OC'er on my Asrock X99 Pro Gaming 7. Set it to 4.2ghz and prayed.

Holding good with 20 minute load test, will do some more later, but just wanted to ask. Noticed volts are set to 1.339v. I'm guessing that's super high? I know auto OC'ers tend to go a little overboard, but will use their settings and scale down.

System:
i7 6800K
Asrock X99 Pro Gaming 7
Corsair Dominator DDR4 2800 C16 @1.2v
Corsair HX850i
Corsair HX110i GTX Push/Pull Corsair ML140/SP140
EVGA GTX 1080 FTW Hybrid @ ~2100/5500

Everything seems to be within range, so will game a bit see if I crash.

Load temps were in the 56-66C range across the board, idle temps are 28C-30C.

Did you purchase the Intel Tuning Protection plan? I have done that for every k/x model I overclock.
http://click.intel.com/tuningplan/purchase-a-plan
No, but I got the Microcenter warranty for two years (cost about $40 if I remember.)

As someone who would probably be investigated if I return yet another monitor, their warranty has saved my rear a few times.

Also, it seems they don't even really ask you what happened, moment they see you got their warranty they start the refund process so /shrug I'll keep buying it haha.
