Someone at slickdeals once wrote, "go to anandtech and ask RussianSensation, he knows everything about graphics cards."

Maybe that should be "gaming computers"

Solid upgrade but what happens if your i7 6800K is a dud overclocker?
...

Look at what would happen if you stayed at 1440p (nevermind 1080p) with an i7 6700K and faster memory and got a GPU as fast as 980Ti SLI:

I've never owned a 1080p monitor and I don't intend to start now

I post something on forum and am completely ignored.

RS posts basically the exact same info a day later and people go crazy.

Just like the old days .

I thought it was pretty common knowledge at this point that you needed super, super fast DDR4 (which wasnt available at launch) to make Skylake truly shine? ITs all I heard about for months "skylake sucks compared to devils canyon" and everyone proclaimed DDR4 sucked. Then someone actually tested it above 3000mhz and was like oh....I see you Skylake, @_@

Mine one question is, will HEDT chips, specifically broadwell-E perform similiar to skylake with faster ram?

Man, I appreciate all the good info but how do you have this much time? Like every post you make is a book in itself. Not hating, just like daaaang|

For the price they are asking, this should have been able to get 4 cores to 4.4-4.5Ghz out of the box and shut down the remaining 6 to use up max TDP headroom. Either way you look at it, a 4.7Ghz i7 6700K would absolutely smash it in any task that requires 4 cores or less.

its really sad because this cpu no longer has a place anymore and is probably the worst black sheep one can get.

Why?

1. It doesnt overclock well, from looking at benchmarks.
So the whole i need moar cores + oc is sort of moot.

2. X class cpu's were mostly for gaming machines and avid overclockers, however again, overclockers are getting shot in the foot, and gamers are better off on a skylake with a higher core frequency + crazy fast ram.

3. Your gonna have your group that says again.. more cores... well, i can more core you on a full bloated enterprise platform with better features on a 2P board with faster base clock which would make the overclocking advantage on this X class very tiny if any.

So i would really like to see the silver lining to this cpu, however at that price point nothing is coming to my head.

If your a gamer, a 6700K with DDR4000 ram will reck this rig unless u intend to drop massive amounts of gpu on it which we all know SLI and Xfire pretty much SUCKS and is not worth it.

If your a production person well, a 2P processor lineup will offer you more cores and a larger ram pool.

If your both, a 2P machine will still give you a better base clock where the overclocking headroom will probably be very much moot in gaming terms, hence the 2P machines will most likely pull ahead in this run as well.

Sigh... again intel.. what the hell are you guys doing?

again... sigh... i am stupid for not getting the 5960x and waiting it off until skylake-e or x whatever they intend to, because this broadwell-e is like picking up that chick from a night club only to find out when lights go on, you completely saw her though beer goggles....

I'd love to use that as my new quote! But, let me play off it - I picked up my last chick (CPU - i7 2600k at 4.4 Ghz) in 2010, but it's 2016 now, and I can pick up a new chick (CPU - i7 6950x at 4.3-4.4 Ghz). And this new chick has better skills (nocturnal - imagine pci-e hdisk 'rapid movement') and a great conversationalist (faster ram), plus she's younger (representing the generational improvements) and so stacked (10 core...) that I don't think I'll need to upgrade for a long time. And by then, maybe what I pick up from the club would be a lot different...()

no because going by that notion, that chick you picked up back in 2010 is still as dayam good looking as the new chick only aged because ur not going to get 4.3ghz out of her according to all the sites...

adam got 4.0 which i think he is holding conservatively... so unless u want to wear her out like a used pile of socks, im guessing 4.1-4.2 maybe the ceiling, which makes the girl in 2010 still look hella good....

Still getting by with a core 2 duo with 4 Meg cache.

I guess if you want to encode video at full 4k that might come in handy. Sure if I wasnt $$ limited, I might buy that. I just dont have any real need for it.

I agree with you with regards to the 6950, but I think if you want an actual upgrade path, X99 is the way to go currently - at least if you intend on going with a 6-core CPU. At least you'll be able to upgrade to a CPU with more cores down the road, and at the rate of CPU progression right now, I think those additional cores are going to be more important than IPC growth since IPC is growing at such a dismal rate.

if you need the additional cores absolutely.

however then its back to the main arguement.

The 5960X can be bought at microcenter for under 900 dollars for a 8 core 4.3ghz pushable cpu.

The 8core variant to broadwell is 999... and its a K cpu let alone a X.

Then we got the 10core black sheep 6950x at 1700-1800 dollars.

If you need the IPC, i would look at a 5960X.
If you need even higher IPC, well i would ignore the 6950x and x99, go on a enterprise platform 2P setup, and grab 2 Xeon E5' hexcores with a high base clock to have a total of 12cores /24 threads at a base clock of around 3.7ghz if gaming is your forte... This allows your rig to have a TON of ram @ ECC if u need it, and also carries a high enough base clock to enjoy games which aren't fully multi threaded.

and best off, no overclocking / tweeking of settings required on that xeon.

this is why i cant understand what the hell intel is thinking in the pricing of broadwell. It doesnt make any sense to me at all.

Newegg apparently screwed up the shipping of my 6800K. Claimed it shipped but it never actually did, it seems.

I am very sad

I guess they figure people will pay that price. And, sure enough, there are a few people on this forum who actually did. I'm genuinely surprised that Newegg sold out of its initial batch, didn't think there'd be a lot of demand for such a product at all.

Broadwell-E is a complete ripoff, it's barely more than a die shrink and they don't even OC as well as Haswell-E. Don't buy these, get a 5930K on sale (I'm seeing them at $500 in the US) or wait for Skywell-E if you want an enthusiast Intel CPU with >4 cores.

This is what sucks about not having competition in a market, no innovation and terrible pricing. Hopefully Zen will steal some of their sales and wake Intel up.

Getting a 6800k myself. Can't wait to get my hands on broadwell-e

Also I don't know why you recommend a $500 cpu when you can get equal or better performance for $350-$450

What are the benchmarks Broadwell-e vs Haswell-e?

@RussianSensation - do you have a link for that review? I have searched Techspot and can't find it.

Yea, the higher priced six core makes no sense for either HW- E or BW-E. However, 5820k is still a very viable choice vs 6800k, especially if one can get it cheaper, which seems to be the case. I do have to say though BW-E is the most disappointing HEDT release that I can recall.
