I would never leave my MP3 player in my car (or at least hide it completely out of view). And now when I'm home, if I borrow my parents' car(s), if I have to leave anything in the car, it goes in the trunk. The only place that is covered by the insurance (AFAIK) if the car is broken into.

The person that lives in the apartment building next to mine parts his car in the alley below my window. He leaves a sign in the windshield "Nothing of value is left in the car". I wonder if it works at all.

Golden rule:

Leave NOTHING in sight any time you are away from your vehicle.

If you even leave a bag, a jacket or anything someone may try to take it in case they contain a wallet or similar.

No. Not even slightly. By the time someone looks out of the window or even realises where the sound is coming from the perp is long gone.

Exactly what happened to me, back when I had my Explorer. I was awakened by the sound of my alarm, one night when I was staying over my gf's house. I got up, threw on some pants and a coat, and rushed outside.

I didn't see anything wrong at first, so I turned off the alarm, and opened the drivers door. Thankfully, nothing was missing, but I notice that the interior light was still on. That's when I saw the glass all over the cargo area. My back window was smashed with a Snaple bottle.

Fu@# they got my amp, I thought, so I got out of the car to take a look. It was right about that time the cops came. Don't move they yelled, and one of them had his hand on his gun. This is my car!! I yelled back, with my hands in the air. I have the keys in my pocket!!!

I told them what pocket the keys were in, and left my hands in the air so they could get them. The cop with the gun relaxed then, and I told them I wanted to see if my amp was still in the back. Glass was everywhere, but thankfully the amp & sub was there too.

I said good night to the cops, and had to leave the car unlocked so the alarm wouldn't go off. I got a new window the next day at work. I was shocked to learn that they come to your location to install it. The guy was missing a finger.:Q

Sorry to hear that man.

I had an attempted break-in when I had my Integra with a full system. They didn't get in, but were nice enough to break my plastic door handle off. I had to PB weld it back on there and it was never quite right and on the verge of coming apart from then on out.

my brother in law had a $400 GPS stolen when they broke his window seeing the holder. Since it needed unlocking via address, they found some school letters addressed to him in the glove compartment. You wanna know what's fuct up? They took some papers out from there and put it on his front doorstep. Talk about giving him the finger.

Sorry to hear man. I keep my car's interior literally empty for this reason. My car has PATS so about the only way to steal it is to put it on a flatbed truck.

God, I have such a hard time getting my fiancee to not leave valuables and dangerous personal information in her car. It's a mid-90's Accord; super easy to break into. She never removes the faceplate on her headunit, and I've found everything from the title to the car to her Social Security card in her glovebox at varying times. She actually had her old car broken into in our driveway (stole her skateboard and CD's, left the CD player and identify theft info, so probably kids), and had it stolen once, too. So it's not like she lives in a bubble where this stuff hasn't happened to her yet. But she won't change her habits.

make sure there was nothing taken/in the glove box to set you up for identity theft. Most car break-in's down here are now just targeting this.

it's not really about nice or not...around here you have million dollar homes behind guard gates that still get smash and grabs going on.

Usually when caught it's some 12-17 year old from a higher income family just doing it for kicks.
