Broke glass of passenger window, and took Navi and Belltronics, in front of my apartment

How nice, lol. I honestly thought it's just happening from TV news, but anyway. Someone last night broke my passenger side window, and grabbed and ran with Garmin and Belltronics RX65. Since I have $ 250 deductible for my comprehensive coverage, I pretty much have to pay everything by myself. (GEICO quoted $ 200 for replacement)

I feel really sux, but well I learned lesson that:

- Don't put anything valuable in a car
- It can happen to you if it happened to someone

I really feel sux

Sorry to hear that. I have had my car broken into twice while sitting in my driveway (I used to live in a bad area in the early 90s).

These days I don't keep ANYTHING in my car. My glovebox has a little wallet with my insurance card and registration, that's it. The cabin of my car is kept empty. Anything I bring along I take out when I leave the car.

You don't even have to keep anything valuable in your car. About 4 years ago, I had my car broken into and the crappy factory tape deck stereo stolen from my '94 Integra. That kind of stereo, street value on it is probably what, a dollar? This was in a *very* nice neighborhood, and they broke the passenger window and the auto shift lever to get it - total was over $600 in damage.

Same here. After they f-ed up my Civic, I don't leave anything behind. I also no longer play loud music in my neighborhood, and keep everything looking clean and empty. (No wires, or even loose paper around.)

Worst part for me was, I probably know the people who stole my radio and f-ed up my car. Buncha lowlife a-sholes.

I leave my Ipod in the center console while at work. But if somebody looks into my car they can't see anything. People will smash windows to get a couple bucks from the change tray.

Man, back when I had my Neon, I was grocery shopping after doing all my Xmas shopping, and someone shattered the side window and took everything.

I've also had people break into both of my Preludes, for stereo/electronics both times.

Some idiot broke my window many years ago and tried to pry my CD head unit out with a screw driver, fucking up the CD player and the dash. I would have preferred the lowlife scum have a little more experience. Hopefully he's dead in a ditch right now.

Don't LEAVE anything in your car overnight. I learned this lesson as well back around xmas....granted they took my amp and deck as well as tomtom, etc.

This belongs in the handheld vs. built-in navi's thread.

Sorry for your losses though, it could've been much higher than $250 cost.

Thanks for the all comments, first of all. I am dealing with insurance, becuase these M-F'ers not only broke the glass, they also damaged the door and seat as well. An insurance repair estimate is $ 1850 without glass repair, how surprise! Now I know what "It's freaking German car" means. Also, I am trying to my apartment management to be awared about the issue of unsafety.

I actually did, but I am not sure how much it would be help though. I should have used Garmin Lock fuction, so the theives could learn lesson.

Haha. That's what exactly police told me when he arrived.

Don't forget to remove the mount away from your dash/windshield. Thieves know that chances are good that if there's a mount, there's a gps in the glove box.

You don't want to tempt them into breaking a window to find out.

I wouldn't lock the glove compartment overnight as a theft prevention. It's good to stop valets and the like, but if someone busts your window it's not difficult to pry open the glovebox really messing up your car.

Once they are inside the car its easy to work on it. My brother mounted his deck to the actual dash vs just a sleeve. One day he forgot to arm his alarm.

They pryed the whole dash apart with a crowbar it seemed.

I wonder if built-in navi systems are really much more safe? I wouldn't doubt that some ass would love to steal the unit in my Nissan since it's pretty much everything all in one and if you yank the trim off, (to my knowledge) it's not hard to get out. =\

This is why I put my Escort 9500i away any time I park in a public area. Last year I made a thread where outside my high school, two cars, one parked in front of me and one in back, were broken into. They were an old 740i and new 300C (grab attention more than a Tundra), and I had put my radar detector in my center console. The 300C guy only had a $20 cell phone, but the 740 guy got his 60gb iPod video stolen. The radar was worth those 2 combined.

And DON'T get lazy and leave the plastic suction cup mount up there.

I had the exact same thing as the OP happen to me a few days ago. Everything else was hidden but the empty mount.

You may think you're parked in a "safe" area, but thieves get just about anywhere sadly.

That sucks... but you lose a lot less if you remove all valuables.

It's such a pain in the ass though, I don't want a man-bag to carry the stuff around. It's like I need a hidden, bulletbroof compartment somewhere.

If you live in an apartment you live in a bad part of town, no matter how nice you think it is. Don't leave crap in your cars people...PERIOD.

I didn't think Little Ferry, NJ was a bad area .. I am in Wayne, NJ myself .. and I agree about not leaving the GPS mount in the car.
And yes, by all means call Garmin and report it stolen and to the police ... You do have the Serial # (I hope)

The most expensive thing I leave in my truck is the jumper cables (behind the seat). Cost? $8 at Walmart. I also leave the door unlocked, since I'd rather give up an $8 pair of jumper cables than a $250 window.

OP, here's what you need!!

Surely you didn't have it sitting out in the open, did you?

Sorry that happened, I can definitely empathize.
