When I broke my arm, I just covered the cast with a big trash bag and tied it around my bicep. Then I just would be careful not to submerge it or anything.

After breaking my arm, I stopped being able to touch my shoulder with it. My fingers end up about half an inch short.

That sucks dude. I broke my right wrist last in March. It's not fun! Fortunately I'm a lefty though, so I didn't have trouble doing schoolwork.

Anyway, they have cast protector things that you put on over the cast so it doesn't get wet, I suggest showering. Submerging the protector (or a trashbag that is taped and rubber banded shut at the top may not be good enough if you submerge it in water for a few minutes.

Also, DO NOT get that cast wet AT ALL! If you need to wash off your hand or something, use one of those no-water, alcohol based hand cleansers. If you get water in that cast, it will stink SO BAD! Trust me. I got a TINY amount of water in mine and it was terrible. So even if you think you can be really careful and not get it wet, it's not worth the risk. You simply cannot get the stank out of the cast once it gets wet either.

Good luck with the arm - hope it heals fast.

What if you pour rubbing alcohol down the cast? Wouldn't that get the smell out? I never had a cast before =)

Casts will get stanky no matter what... moisture plus body equals stinky bacteria.

You don't want to get it very wet because it could potentially cause ulcers.... if you get it wet use a blow dryer and dry it out as much as possible... no need to be paranoid about it though...

I wouldn't recommend pouring rubbing alcohol down your cast...your arm will be dry enough once you get it out of that cast. Plus, even though it's drying, it starts out wet and could mess up the cast.

djheater, wtf are you talking about? Ulcers? Btw, I tried using a blow dryer when I got my cast the tiniest bit wet...it didn't help the stank. If you keep it 100% dry, you will decrease the stank level and hold it off for awhile. Sure, it might get a little smelly, but not as bad as if you get any bit of water in there.
