Broken Magsafe :(

Is there like a common malfunction on these things? It's $60 to replace.

The replacement program that Oil linked to only pertains to the older T style connectors, not the newer L style that your Air would have come with.

If it is a fraying issue, then absolutely take it in.

I mean, really, take it in regardless, worst they can do is say 'No, we won't replace it for free'.

My Magsafe connector broke for my 2010 Macbook Pro about 3 weeks ago. It was older than 1 year, but I was still covered by AppleCare. The Genius Bar staffer mentioned that power cords are normally not covered, but he gave me a free replacement anyways (since I was under warranty). They saved me an easy $70.

The fraying is a common problem. I've always taken care of my power adapter and it has never frayed. I owned both the L and T style power adapter.

While Apple's products in general have a high quality, they've never quite mastered power cables. I haven't owned a single Apple cable that hasn't frayed. You really have to baby them because they damage so easily. At least with the iDevices, the cables are modular. So you don't have to replace the entire adapter if the cable goes.

Unfortunately, Apple keeps a tight lid on Magsafe connectors. Third party power supplies with better quality cables aren't widely available.

Try taking it to the Apple store and see what they'll do. IIRC, there are some guides online to splice your own better quality cables as well. If you're comfortable with soldering.

The cable? Or the jack on the computer?

Last I checked, the actual "magsafe" part is the jack + board it's attached to, which is separate from the rest of the logic board. So, worst case scenario, your logic board is fine and you just need a replacement magsafe board. Last time I replaced one was almost a year ago... it was like $20 or so.

If it's the cable, then good luck. The stupid charger is more expensive than the internal part...

Is it the T style? As others have said they have a recall on that and you can get it replaced for free. Just take it into the local Mac store if you have one, of not just open a case online with Apple or call them.

The cable broke right where it connected to the magnetic connector. The square box had also come apart. When I got it back, it was taped up and worked fine. The green/orange LEDS didn't work after that however. I sold the macbook years ago so I don't have any pics.
