would a broken pin on my hard drive cause an unsupported hardware error when i try to enable dma? otherwise the drive works fine. drivers for the ide controllers are new, but i get the same error when enabling dma on the cd drives, except when i reboot the dma is still checked. not so with the hard drive. bios settings have dma on.

Here's a link that explains what each pin does. An electrician at work was able to get one back on for me. We attached the cable after we got it on, and that cable has never been removed since. The drive works fine. I wouldn't recommend just putting the pin in the cable, it needs to be re-attached to the drive first.

i would recommend replacing the drive if you get it to work again, and manage to get your stuff off. Hard drives can be shaky enough without having to worry about replacing pins...

I find your sig humorous. Time for a new motherboard and hard drive.

$400?? I hate to say it but you got ripped off bad! For $400 you can easily have a 3Ghz P4 and 512MB of memory or almost a complete machine at Dell.

I don't think you need to replace the board but I would replace the drive ASAP if you care about your data on it.

This ended up being the problem for me on my IBM/Hitachi GXP180 (my post here). Replacing a single pin seems pretty tough. I like the idea of cramming another pin in the connector on the cable, and leaving the cable connected permanently, but I don't know if it'll work.
