Um, I don't own an outhouse. My bathroom is heated like the rest of the house.

$74 seems like a bit of an investment to make your butt sweat when you are taking a dump.

There's no reason to thread crap (even in a thread about toilets ). $74 is a good price for this item and in cold climates where porcelain can get shockingly cold in the middle of the night, even in a heated room, this is a useful invention. My wife would love one of these, but sadly I don't have an outlet nearby and I'm not ripping the wall/tile out to add one.

Isn't that what extension cords are for? Or does it have to be wired directly into a power source?

Well, it was 1degF here Friday (much colder if you counted wind chill), but again, I keep my house warm enough that it isn't an issue with our bathroom. I wouldn't want our pipes to freeze.

As it happens, when we remodeled the bathroom (which is cornered by two outside walls), we actually put an outlet in by the toilet, but still, $74 seems a bit excessive. $20 will buy a nice little space heater that can be used if your bathroom is getting chilled.

Technically, a heated toilet seat is a "hot" deal, I guess.

It just seems funny, because in some places, like Alaska, people still have outhouses - and use them in the middle of winter. They tend to use a styrofoam block with a hole cut out. I can't even imagine doing that in the middle of a January night north of Anchorage, but a heated toilet seat seems like the opposite end of that extreme.

I stayed in a resort that had these. Even when the room was 70 degrees it's a nice surprise to sit on a warm seat. Your body temp is almost 100 degrees and anything cooler makes you clinch up when you really need to relax

I added an outlet just for it on my 2nd floor. There is a outlet between my toilet and sink higher up for hair dryer. Its 25w ish if on and there is a sleep timer that turns it completely off, only turn it on when your ass goes on it.

I rarely use the timer because sometimes at night the kids need to get up and pee so having it warm in the winter is great.. I can't really tell how much but i can put that watts reader on it

What does something like this do to your electric bill?

I have three of these in the house (3 bathrooms) albeit of different brand. Each one is rated at max of 50 watts although we never use the max setting. There is a dial control for setting temp and usually are set at less than 1/3 of the way from minimum. I used extension cords to connect it to the sink outlets and uses a timer to turn if off auto during low usage times like midnight to 5:00 AM. All bathrooms are heated like the entire house but even then, the ceramic seats do get cold. You can use textile seat covers to prevent cold shock but then, neither can you wipe or clean the seat after each use. With the heated toilet seat, you can wipe it after each use and still keeping it warm. And no, it is not shockingly hot even at the highest setting but it will start to become uncomfortable after seating on it for awhile if set to max. So the best setting is between 1/3 to mid-point between min and max. And yes, my visitors always asked where I got them and love them.

so max setting 50 watts at 24 hours a day is 1.2 KWH. At average us price of 10 cents a day, about 3$ a month.

Trust me, if you live in north east or colder area, its so worth it.. even if the room is heated.. my small bathroom is 8x8, even with a 4000btu heater/towel rack in there, the heated seat is so nice. I'm always on the lowest setting, its pretty hot if you sit there for a while but eat your veggies so you dont need to sit there for 20 min at a time

I wouldn't compute it at max setting since it really gets too warm and uncomfortable even for the first 3 minutes. I'll say 1/3 setting or even 1/2 setting should suffice more than enough which means about $1.50 a month per seat. Not bad at all considering the convenience and jolly experience you will have at the John!

I once paid big bucks for a fancy butt washer and it lasted about a year and a half. I replaced it with a el cheapo $30 one from Amazon and it's been bullet proof.

Yeah, but that's for just a single heated toilet seat. ATOT'ers have mansions with like 22 bathrooms.

I had the pleasure of trying these for the first time in my life about 8 years ago at my in-law's place in Japan. It's absolutely one of those things you never thought you needed until you've tried it. That's not a euphemism for wanting something unnecessary, it's really great to be able to sit down, and get that slightly warm feeling instead of having your buttocks clinch up and delaying your business.

For those of you advocating a space heater; that's neither convenient, nor energy-efficient (this stuff average 8~12W, instead of 600~1200W for a typical space heater). Plastic/porcelain, having a high specific-heat, would take 60+ minutes to warm up with a convection heating medium. You really want to wait 60 minutes to take a crap? I didn't think so. FYI, almost all bathrooms in Japan have outlets next to their toilet area for this exact purpose. I realize that this isn't viable for most Americans (which is unfortunate), but for those of us who have the opportunity to implement it, it's awesome. Don't crap on something (no pun intended) if you've never tried it!

The warning label states that incorrectly wiring to 240V can result in permanent branding.

Reminds me of that WW2 comedy movie (I can't remember the name) with the guy who died because he plugged a vibrator into a German 240 volt plug. "It took our best surgeons weeks to remove the smile"
