This printer is amazing. I love my HL-1440, HL-1240, and HL-1210. If you pick it up you may want to stick in another 32mb of RAM for $10.

I just might jump on this.

Recently my Brother HL-1240 (3 years old) is printing a little weird on the right hand side, it's like a very light shade of grey? Is this an indication that the drum/toner are almost empty?

Rossman, search for this printer on Amazon and you will see that some of the reviews about this printer also mention the same problem. Apparently, the only solution is that you will have to get a new toner.

I have the HL-1440 and it's a great printer. The past few months though for some reason, everything that prints has a light shade of black/grey printed on the whole paper, so the paper isn't white anymore. None of the lights for the toner/drum are blinking so that's supposed to mean that I don't need new tuner or a new drum, but then I have no idea what the problem is. Could it be that I'm not using regular paper? Recently I've been using a Great White Multipurpose paper (it's a little thicker than normal paper).

Anyone have any ideas?

Also, where's a good place to get a good price on memory for these printers?

All in all though the printer is great.

Wow! An exceptional price for a low end laser. I use this in one of the offices and under hard conditions and it does exhibit some issues, but overall I am quite pleased at the cost per page. We also have two fax machines with the same print mechanisms. If something goes wrong, at this price I would just consider it disposable as the cost of repair is almost the price of a new unit w/ toner & drum cartridge. If you need a laser then this is the way to go. The drum can be recharged and the toner cartridge replenished further dropping the cost per page. No brainer purchase if you want my opinion.

It actually needs FPM 72-pin SIMM, EDO won't work with the printer.

I've had one for about 3 months now and dearly love it.

Added a 64 MB stick of memory (72pin EDO 60ns, 2K refresh) and it seems to accept the entire thing as the print configuration report shows 66 MB of installed RAM.

The manual says that it accepts a maximum of 32 additional MB of "60-80ns, 72pin, 32 or 36 bit output". Tech suppoort says either EDO or FPM, but was completely unable to answer any questions about the refresh rate needed if EDO. I'm aware that it could be a misreporting, but it might be a case of the machine taking up to 32 of fpm or 64 of edo, and to keep things simple (which Brother seems to commonly do) they simply report a max of 32. Anybody know much about how the registers of EDO get reported, or have meaningful feedback on this.

I recently bought this printer as well. It works awesome. Added another 32 MB ram a really like it. Has anyone else that has this model (HL-1440) experienced any issues with printing large docs (i.e 50+ pages) I am running XP on a Athlon 1700XP, the print monitor tells me there is over 500MB being sent to the printer for a PDF (50+ pages), does this sound right? It takes f o r e v e r - otherwise this little printer is a champ for smaller print jobs IMO.

Have any idea how to get rid of these grey markings?

You think we just need a new toner? I actually bought this printer about a year and a half ago and I'm still using the original toner that it came with. Anyone have any ideas or experience with this?

Thanks...

I have a Brother Laser 4350 All-In-One and the cause of this is the drum. I have had the printer for a few years and it happens after a while every time I replace the drum. [the drum/low toner replacement light is always on it seems]. A replacement drum is pricey. I think Brother makes money with this in mind the way moste printer companies make money on ink. I probably would have saved money buying a different/ better quality laser printer.

If you want to print 1200x600dpi, you need to put more RAM. To me sometimes, the printer will print out something like not enough memory when I try to print at 600dpi, before I put an extra RAM.

using a $50 off $250 coupon on two of them is not as good as buying them separately and using the $30 off $150 twice. it actually cost you $10 more ($30+$30=$60).

This is hot. Can you run some sort of stress test to see if the HL-1440 will use the full 66MB? Try printing some really huge beast of a graphics page. If it uses more than 36MB then this is A Good Thing To Know.

can you test and make sure the printer is actually using all 64megs? if so, this is hot!

What are you basing this on? I just ordered this printer. I mostly want it for fast text, but I would like decent graphics too.

The ZDNET review says:

"Graphics output also looked excellent, with especially smooth gradients. Upon close inspection, we could make out some dot patterns on a document at the default 600dpi resolution, but they weren't visible at a more customary distance. When we tested the printer at its highest 1,200x600dpi resolution, photographs appeared smoother than at lower resolutions. "
