The shades of gray is the sign that you need to replace the toner. Usually when you start seeing the shades, you can print about 100 more pages before the toner light comes up. My printer actually has a new problem, it printed three black dots on the left side on every single page, anyone experiencing this?

Yeap! This is the sign that you have to get a new cartridge.

Re: toner refill ? - I have been exploring this too . Look around at these imaging supplies dealers : www.summitlaser.com , www.futuregraphicsllc.com and maybe call or email them (if asked tell them line story that you are a repair business and recharging carts is part of your business) . BTW, they a have handling fee on small orders . I have heard that the this " engine" on this printer is sort of odd ( compared to Samsung , Fuji-Xerox, Canon ) and that the aftermarket refill toner is not very compatible with the factory toner and you have to make sure the cartridge is completely empty before you refill .

What I'd like to know is does the 1440 work with *all* FPM and EDO SIMMS, or just the 4K refresh ones. The older 2K refresh I am sure of, but the 4K...?

I have an HL-1440 too that I got when it was a lot more money: $250. It's been really good and prints very fast. One paper jam so far. The manual feeder is cool for special sized media. It's hooked to the print server on our router

Only problem is if you print big big graphics, along with the print it makes a config sheet that says it switched to a lower res to fit it to the ram (I haven't upgraded above 2mb though).

i just got my 1440 today, and i opened up the back of the printer where the memory slot is suppose to be...
i only see 1 72pin Simm slot.. is this correct? or is there another panel that i have to open to get to the other simm slot? I was expecting two simm slots side by side. what's going on?

To get 34mb do i need to just add 1 edo simm of 32mb?

Thanks in advance

One Simm slot. As earlier posters have found that 64 MB simms can be added. Looking through my oldies I only could find 16 MB simms which works fine. Now I have 18 MB. I abuse this printer and print thousands of text pages a week.
I have some minor jam problems, but very satisfied with the output speed. Now on my third toner cartridge we shall see if this can hold up to long term usage.

Anyone know of a place to get 32 meg FMP simms cheap? I can't see spending even $15 for one.

If you live in the Bay Area, try the Weird Stuff warehouse or the surplus/used stuff stores on Lawrence opposite Fry's in Sunnyvale.

I got a 64MB 4K refresh SIMM for $10 from these folks:
http://store.yahoo.com/komusa/64edo72pinsi1.html

Installed in the quite-cramped HL-1440 slot and the Printer's config now shows 66MB installed. QUite a bit more than the "32MB" maximum that Brother spec. However, the higher-end printers in the same line take up to 128MB so I figured the RAM interface muxt be similar.

Works fine. The 4K SIMMS are more common and cheaper than the old 2K ones, and are designed to be used in pairs in older Pentium-class motherboards. But a single 4K works fine in my HL-1440. It has a 1.03 BIOS, if that's important.

Toner refill is easy ,getting that cap off is tricky.
I bought refill supplies on ebay.

As far as discoloration of paper ,
Remove Toner shake horiontally then slide the little blue tab back and forth.
After refilling pages come out discolored for a 100 sheets or so
no big deal

A point of clarification re print artifacts. Faint printing of text in a vertical bar indicates a lack of toner flow to that area on the page. Even the Canon based print engines with combo toner/drum cartridge will do that and your manual indicates removing and shaking the cartridge assy horizontally - side to side to redistribute the dwindling toner within the assy.

Getting grey or black vertical bars (not text or other images) would indicate a dirty drum. So with the Brother, toner cartridge replacement will like be fruitless. Carefully follow the advice mentioned above about "scrubbing" the drum.

Hope RossMan got in on this deal either at OM F&F sale or the end of May sub deal. Thanks to all for posting.
