I've heard very good things about this printer. Of course not the BEST printer out there, but best for the cost.

This printer is Kick @ss! Plain and Simple! I've had this for about 7 months, never a problem, prints quick and excellent output. I don't know what a basic home user needs in a laser printer that this doesn't offfer - and nothing touches it at this price!

Keep in mind this is NOT a good casual user printer... the setup uses a seperate drum and toner. although the drum is rated for 15,000 pages, that is 15,000 continuous pages. If you let it sit between printing, and print 100-200 pages a month, you will DRASTICALLY shorten the life of the drum, down to possibly as low as 1,000 - 1,200 sheets. Considering the drum is ~$160, this gets expensive fast, and you'd be better off with an HP model with the drum built into the toner. However, if you're exceeding this 200 pages a month, RossMan is correct, best damn printer you can get at this price range, esspecially if you add a little bit of memory to it

This is the best printer I've ever owned. Easy to install and VERY reliable. If it ever dies, I'm buying another.

Brother laser printers, from the entry level such as this, on through their servers models, beat anything out in their respective class and price ranges

If you keep it powered off between uses, why would it matter?

How do you get it for $199? The text says it's $199 for a limited time, but when I add it to my cart, it's $249.

How do you get this printer to be 199.99????

When added to cart, its 250?

I know it says 199.99 for a limited time but when you add it, its 250. Is there a special way you have to do it, b/c 250-40 is not hott!

Good question. I am trying to compare this to the Samsung ML-1430. If the toner for this is $160 and I don't plan on a high volume of pages per day is this really a good buy for a student? I like the expandable RAM but for normal use I am torn over the issue.

If you look around ( www.froogle.com) , the Brother DR400 drum unit cartridge can be purchased for about $110 . Apparently , the jury is still out on rebuilt drum cartridges for these as I only saw one source (vs many for toner cartridges) for $ 49.95 .

The toner isn't $160 - the drum is $160. These are totally different pieces, but work in conjunction with each other. The toner cartridge connects to the drum so the image can be placed on the paper when the printer prints.

I was at Office Depot the other day to pick up a toner cartridge for my Brother 1440 printer. Their prices were as follows:

- 3,000 page toner cartridge by Brother: $49.99
- 6,000 page toner cartridge by Brother: $69.99

Obviously, the 6,000 page cartridge is the "no brainer" buy. When Brother ships the 1440, it only has the lower capacity toner cartridge supplied. Depending on your useage, you could consume the initial toner quite quickly. Additionally, I have seen toner refill kits on the 'Net for the Brother printer (unfortunately, I didn't book-mark the site) - but, the prices I remember seeing were in the range of $45.00 and you get two bottles of toner refill for this price. I may consider this option next time since I now have an empty cartridge that I can experiment with.

However, one thing about the 1440 - or, specifically, my 1440 really concerns me. When I took out the old toner cartridge, I inspected the drum assembly. The drum itself is rubber coated - and is in great condition. However, the adjacent "film covered" roller next to the drum has some scratches in it. I wonder if this is going to cause any issues with creating a bad image with my print-outs. Does anyone have any imput on this? I guess I'm a bit concerned about what may have caused the scratches.

[Edit]: Not that I care to plug any particular company, but I've come across a company that sells the high capacity refill kits for $19.00. Additionally, the same site tries to rip you off by charging $5.00 to give you instructions for resetting the drum. However, I've found a site that contains a very detailed .PDF document on resetting the drum - and best of all it's "FREE."

I just ordered one of these refill kits for my 1440 from SaveonToner.com (from Ebay). It was $15 plus $5 for shipping. I just popped of the cap emptied the old toner, used a vacuum to remove the rest of the toner, and refilled it. Printed the first page and it was terrible... black stripes everywhere. Printed about 30 pages and it cleaned up and printed fine. Saved a ton.

Not for me - I bought it and after 4000 sheets got artifacts and faint grey lines not correctable by any means.

I usually buy the toner with other junk and use $ off coupons, so its not a big deal.

Hmm...just a newbie question from a newbie. Where do I find codes for these instant rebate codes you put in when checking out? For instance, where can I find the code for this $40 off $200 coupon and what is the coupon code in this case? Thanks!

Pfatwallet.com is one such site. This OD deal may have expired. However, you can still get the printer from Office Depot for $198.## minus a $25.00 coupon = $174.00. Not quite $160.00, but still a good price for this printer. The extra 10% off sale on laser printers expired yesterday (Tuesday) at Office Depot, otherwise, you could have saved another $18.00 taking the price down to $156.00 + tax.
