Good question. I am trying to compare this to the Samsung ML-1430. If the toner for this is $160 and I don't plan on a high volume of pages per day is this really a good buy for a student? I like the expandable RAM but for normal use I am torn over the issue.[/quote]
The toner isn't $160 - the drum is $160. These are totally different pieces, but work in conjunction with each other. The toner cartridge connects to the drum so the image can be placed on the paper when the printer prints.
I was at Office Depot the other day to pick up a toner cartridge for my Brother 1440 printer. Their prices were as follows:
- 3,000 page toner cartridge by Brother: $49.99
- 6,000 page toner cartridge by Brother: $69.99
Obviously, the 6,000 page cartridge is the "no brainer" buy. When Brother ships the 1440, it only has the lower capacity toner cartridge supplied. Depending on your useage, you could consume the initial toner quite quickly. Additionally, I have seen toner refill kits on the 'Net for the Brother printer (unfortunately, I didn't book-mark the site) - but, the prices I remember seeing were in the range of $45.00 and you get two bottles of toner refill for this price. I may consider this option next time since I now have an empty cartridge that I can experiment with.
However, one thing about the 1440 - or, specifically, my 1440 really concerns me. When I took out the old toner cartridge, I inspected the drum assembly. The drum itself is rubber coated - and is in great condition. However, the adjacent "film covered" roller next to the drum has some scratches in it. I wonder if this is going to cause any issues with creating a bad image with my print-outs. Does anyone have any imput on this? I guess I'm a bit concerned about what may have caused the scratches.
[Edit]: Not that I care to plug any particular company, but I've come across a company that sells the high capacity refill kits for $19.00. Additionally, the same site tries to rip you off by charging $5.00 to give you instructions for resetting the drum. However, I've found a site that contains a very detailed .PDF document on resetting the drum - and best of all it's "FREE."
