Browser rant - shifting screen - gotcha again

It doesn't seem to matter if I use IE or Google Chrome, probably endemic to most browsers.

Here is the "fun" thing that happens to me multiple times per day and I would LOVE to see this fixed or mitigated.

So you navigate to a web page - it could be MSN news, BBC, your favorite forum, whatever. Then you see something you want to look at, put your cursor on the item and click. Hah hah, just a split second later the page shifts down or up and you click on something else and the page navigates to something you didn't want to go to. Hit the back button for the umpteenth time and try again, only this time wait a little longer.

This is a frustration which occurs many times every day and is now my most hated browsing experience. Hah hah, gotcha, pulled that link right out from under you and send you to somewhere else, again and again.

Google Chrome, IE, FF or whatever, ALL need to build in a feature which holds the page in place while all the crap continues to load. That is a feature that would be so WONDERFUL.

Can I hear an amen?

Try disabling smooth scrolling in your browser settings and see if it helps. I'm having a vague feeling that this has happened to to me once or twice in the past too, just not as frequent as you say is happening with you.

I think it could also be a problem where ads load after the rest of the page. When you are about to click something, the ads load and push the content down. This is very annoying, especially on mobile devices.

Do you have an ad blocker? In almost all cases it is due to ads loading, and it is extremely annoying. And companies wonder why ad blockers are so popular.

agreed. most annoying on chrome for android. reminds me of the south park episode this year where the kids are trying to look up something, get distracted, click on something by accident and all of a sudden are eating ice cream and buying shoes

They do make a fix for that. It's called an ad blocker. There are very few sites that I will hit with mine disabled due to annoyances of these things.

If its happening due ads being loaded, you should get an ad-blocker. Get ublock origin.

Way back in the olden days when everyone used Netscape until Microsoft released Internet Explorer, one reason I stuck with Netscape was that IE did that very thing. As graphics loaded, everything else on the page shifted around. Netscape didn't do that and I was pleased.

Firefox does it now though. So those wonder days are long gone.

I believe browsers already try to minimize repaints but I suppose sometimes you may be at the mercy of your internet provider.

I would recommend trying uBlock[1] in the "medium" blocking mode[2]. It can reduce what's loaded so it may minimize repaints and some dynamic content. Another (good) side effect of using it this was is increased security/privacy at minimal user overhead. It's very easy to use and will net the most "bang for your buck" in terms of user interaction required vs security/privacy trade off. I highly recommend using uBlock in this mode. If you found NoScript/uMatrix too much work/learning curve then I recommend trying this mode as well. Works on both Chrome and Firefox.

Oh I have ad blocker on my PC at home and it works pretty good stopping pop-up ads etc.

I appears the problem with page jumping around is mainly due to stuff loading and changing positions of the page until it's all settle down.
