If that happened then maybe valve could start laying down the law on DRM/GFWL, because neither is neccesary with steam, theyre just extra nuisances to deal with.

Valves a great company, they deserve their well thought out success, thank god its not the "EA store" or some ubisoft thought out corporate BS thing thats being talked about, it would be much worse then.

the only problem i have is the whole 2nd hand market dissapears - which is probably exactly why all PC gaming will move to steam and it's ilk.

still going to suck if we can't give our games to others though

There's hardly any recent pc games that you can sell any more. I've come to accept that.

Good. This is awesome, and I hope what they say is true; it would definitely mean better distributed, better priced video games.

and the inability to resell means i can't justify the price the games cost - whether valve set the prices or not. e.g crysis. i've been looking for both games on steam for ages and the best price i've seen is the pack for £29.99. without being able to resell should i feel the need, the games would have to be half that price for me to buy,

then you have games like COD. a campaign, but also an online mode? i can't be bothered playing online anymore due to shenanigans but why would i pay full price for MW2 when i only want the campaign. on the same note, what about people that bought MW and MW2 but never played the single player? they should be able to buy just the online part of the game.

Utter utter bullshit.
Every game on Steam, except for when they have a sale, I can get cheaper elsewhere. And sometimes even when they DO have a sale.
And not every game goes on sale.

If Steam becomes pretty much the only way to play PC games (I do not see this happening), then I will unfortunately have to stop playing PC games.
Steam/Valve = the Apple of PC gaming. Sure it all looks pretty, and there are lots of fanboys, but in the end it's all about control. Them having control.

Maybe for you. I'm not so certain that I can.

I'd likely stop playing new games if this happened, just hope the classics still work on whatever OS happens to be current.

I like Steam. I like opening up one application that has all my games in one place, all up to date and I know will run as intended. It's infinitely better than EA store or GFWL BS that is utter garbage and just another obstacle before playing the game.

I never end up selling games anyway, so I can see how some don't like it. Buying a hard copy of a game will never disappear, 90% of my games are on a physcial disk and I don't see that changing anytime soon. If Valve want to take the initiative and push into new platforms like Mac/Linux then power to them....nobody else has bothered and these are new markets for expansion.

IMO Steam's Weekend Sales > 2nd Hand Market for the buyer. Unfortunately they are worse for the sellers. I would suggest people that really depend on reselling to simply wait for the sales. Although, if you were selling used games to places like Gamestop, then you were getting ripped the fuck off anyways. The only person that is truly affected is the one that was manually selling their games to other people for a decent price.

How exactly would a monopoly on digital distribution mean better service or better prices? Just like the other recent monopolies, I expect prices to go up and services to come down once they can finish crushing their competitors.

I don't see anything good about that. If I buy a game, that game becomes my PROPERTY, and I should be able to sell it to anyone I want at any point. If that is not so, than I am effectively RENTING that game. But if I am renting it, why should I pay a full price for it?

That's a good idea. Look at how online sales have changed music distribution. It used to be all CDs. You had to pay $10 or $20 for the CD you wanted even if you only liked one or two songs from it. Online music sales let you buy just the songs you like and skip all the filler. I'd like to see the same thing from games, with an incentive to buy the whole thing. Of course it'll never happen.

Oh well, at least Steam lets you hold onto your games forever and re-download them whenever you want. I remember hearing that EA's online game store charges you extra to re-download your games for just a two-year period and they also have no way of backing up your games. So basically if you have to reinstall your OS you have to pay them extra. No thanks.

Crysis Complete was $13 during holiday sale.

Direct2drive still seems to be a viable competitor to steam, so hopefully they'll both grow and compete on price.

I can't get enough of the Steam deals. I mean, $4.99 for Vice City and $2.49 for Max Payne 2? I couldn't pass those up!

Awesome. However, I will only buy games via STEAM if they are below a certain price and only if it's not sold by another digital provider at/near the same price. D2D seems to be keeping an eye on STEAM as they put the same games on sale [usually .01 cheaper] than STEAM.

IE: Civ 4 was on sale at the same price on STEAM and D2D - I chose D2D simply because I don't need Steam to install/run the game and I can easily "gift" the game to whomever I want [the installation only verifies the game key - not who purchased it].

It's a give and take, and I would give that away in return to be able to install any game in my library at will without any media or hassle.

Now they just need to get rid of the 3rd party DRM crap, they don't need it.

I've come to like Steam quite a bit. Though I worry what will happen to price/service if they are the only player.

yeah, when i bought Arkham asylum, why the holy hell did it have the taint-ware GFWL on it.

that was so annoying, and yet totally unnecessary on a platform like steam.

and now the music entities are complaining that people are only picking up a couple tracks per cd as another reason for sales falling.

How could this possibly be good for the market? You all seem to think that Valve is some benovelent deity that only has our interest at heart and would stop at nothing to lower their prices.

The truth is that if they monopolise the market they will have no incentive to lower prices, seeing as all of the competition will be gone.
