BSOD during XP/Vista install on Intel D975XBX2 (RESOLVED!)

I just set up the hardware for a new system and when the OS starts to load, I'll get the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). A quick google around for "D975XBX2 bsod" reveals many people having similar problems (primarily loading Vista) and their solution was to load the new BIOS (2618). I've done that but still no love.

Several have suggested that their RAM wasn't on the Intel approved list (wtf? do they think they are IBM?). I've got good RAM, selected because it is SLI and Vista compatible, but now I'm worried that Intel will push back on me and say its not supported. I've disabled multi core and I'm not overclocking (yet) but this board was marketed for its overclocking capabilities for gamers.

Any suggestions? There is a INF pre-installation to OS procedure (linky), but I don't understand how to load it as I don't even have formatted hard drives (just RAID volumes right now).

UPDATE: Changing out the SATA DVD drive for a IDE one solved the problem and I'm able to load Windows. Bad drive? Nope ... GTJ pointed out that the Marvell SATA slots might require loading the Marvell RAID drivers ... I hesitantly tried it out but it worked like a charm! http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2024206#post2024206

I bought that some motherboard last week. I have the same memory that you do. I had a horrible experience with the board. I got BSOD in Windows XP and frequent crashes. I also couldn't overclcock a lick with the board. I just chalked it up as a bad board but maybe it just didn't like the Patriot memory?

Mine installed fine, I have the Crucial Ballistix. If your Patriot sticks are on Micron D9s I don't see why Crucial would work and Patriot wouldn't.
Did you change the memory voltage to the one specified by Patriot in the BIOS before installing?
Did you try with one stick at first to see if that will even work? (Maybe one stick is bad?)

Not sure these are D9 sticks or not, I know that most of them are or were. I haven't tried just going with one stick - will this board function with just one? (I thought filling both slots was required)

I haven't changed voltage either - in the BIOS it said they were running at 1.84 which is between the 1.8 and 1.9 suggested by Intel. (although the motherboard is supposed to go up to 2.4)

Here it shows your RAM spec at 2.2V. Try changing that first. It could be the problem if its trying to run at that speed but not getting the voltage. You can always back down to find the lowest stable setting.

It should work fine with 1 stick. Try that if the above doesn't work.

Ok ... will give that a shot in about 30 minutes & report. Thanks for your thoughts.

No such luck, the mobo auto-detects the RAM as 5-5-5-16 (1.84) so I adjusted the settings to 4-4-4-12 (2.1 and 2.2) to no avail. Pulled out the RAM and tried one at a time without additional success.

Sounds like either a RAM or RAID issue.

Can you try the install with one HDD?

But first, for RAM, just use one dimm, with voltage set to default, but with timings @ 5-5-5-15, & divider set to 1:1.

Then run Memtest for a while.

If that passes, then i'd bet on it being your RAID config acting up.

I did try the single HDD setup w/o RAID. The BSOD reads: 'check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer'. and hard drive configuration (RAID) was my first guess.

Trying mem at 5-5-5-15 with default v1.84 ... er ... how do I set/adjust divider? (and should I use ECC or the selected Non-ECC setting?)

Complete BSOD is:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps. Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check you hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer.
Technical information:xxx STOP: OXOOOOOO7B (OxF78D2524, OXOOOOOO34,OXOOOOOOOO,OXOOOOOOOO)"

Finding a couple of hits googling for "OxF78D2524", maybe I can come up with something? Update: from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324103

Note that my DVD player and all hard drives are SATA

Worth a shot, will take a look there. Thanks EagleRock

... ugh ... registration there is manually controlled. I have to wait for human validation (sigh).

I meant rated default vdimm for your RAM.

1.8V is too low!

Sorry, bear with me - this is the first system I've put together. The only memory settings I have in the BIOS is "Memory Voltage" which is the 1.84 value and I've upped this to the 2.1 and 2.2 as rated by the RAM. What's the divider?

"If I'm still out of work next week, maybe I'll put a FAQ together.

Put the jumper in maintenance mode and on the Maintenance page, set C1E and Watchdog disabled. On the Security page, set VT Technology disabled. On the Power page, set EIST disabled. On the Exit page, do a "Save Custom Defaults". Doing this gives you a baseline.

Reset the jumper and go back into the BIOS. On the Performance/Memory page, set Reference Freq to 266 and Memory Freq to 533. This will give you a 1:1 ratio at the 1066 strap. With those sticks, leave the timings at 5-5-5-15 for now but you can bring up the memory voltage to 2.08. Of course with the FSB still set at 266, you'll be severely underclocking the memory but you wont be there for long.

Make sure you're stable here although performance will suck.

If you're stable, you should be able to go back to the BIOS Performance/Processor page and move the Host Clock Frequency (FSB) up to 320+ without changing any other settings on that page. Do it in steps of 10 or 15 making sure you're stable at each. Don't stop at 320 if it's stable, just keep going until it's not.

After that, you'll have to decide what your goals are. Raw performance, low heat/noise, etc.

Oh yeah, keep good records." by gtj (End Quote)

Not sure this will help. Let us know how you do.
My order should be in by this Wednesday with one item from another vendor end by the end of the week. I do hope you find your way through this.

are we sure all 3 of the HD's are good? All it takes is for one to be bad in a raid config like that.

Im sure between AT and xtreme systems we can figure this out.

I posted over on XtremeSystems (takes 24 hours to get an account) so let's hope the guru's of gurus can come up with something. I'll certainly post findings back here.

The memory successfully passed an hour of MemTest86+ (left both sticks in, 0 errors) and I'm going to run some tests now using the UBCD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/). The hard drives were new, really think one could be bad? Remember I did try to install using both RAID and single HDD arrangement (but didn't unplug cables).

I'll go through Eagle Rock's find (from XtremeSystems) next - boy I hope you don't have the problems I'm having, or at the very least are able to learn from them quickly!

yes HDD's can come DOA. Its rare but happens. I know you tried a single HDD, but did you then try installing on the 2nd or 3rd one?

I ran into this same problem after trying to use SATA DVD writers on the both the Intel and Marvell sata controllers. I tried to repartion and reformat the drive using my Vista disc but there's only a quick format option and it did not work. I was able to fix this problem by using my W2K Professional installation cd to delete the drive partition, recreate it, and then format the disc (not the quick format).

This solved the problem and I was able to reinstall vista. Before doing the install I removed the SATA DVD drives and installed an ATA IDE drive. I don't plan to try the SATA DVD drives again until Intel releases new Vista driver for the Marvell controller.

I didn't run into any problems with my system. I ran a raid0 off the intel sata controller and I used a sata DVD writer... everthing loaded... i'm just running vista 32 bit for now... so I can get some decent gaming in

Ok, I am about to pull the trigger on a Vista, nVidia 8800GTX, E6600, Patriot eXtreme Performance 2GB (2 x 1GB) build. After seeing this thread, I was a little nervous about the memory, but seeing that it was the Sata DVD, I feel better.

Any other suggestions before I do the deed??

i have lite on Sata dvd-rom/writers --no problem on vista 64/badaxe 2.
But i do have that unidentified sata controller i mentione din another post...which i am assuming is the marvell one.

I'm using OCZ platinum xtc revision 2 6400 ram ...but the person who built it left it at
5-5-5-15 timings @ 1.79 volts. Not sure if that was done on purpose or just didn't bother with the manual setting required. OCZ has assured me that it will work at the stated timings.

As is..everything seems rock stable but i am seeing a growing list of compatibility issues.
