I've seen how posts like these go on this forum, and have already been into my Event Viewer and found these two errors the second of the crash:

ERROR 1

Event Type: Error

What should I do?

My system specs:

Windows XP Professional SP1a
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
Radeon 9800PRO
1gig Kingmax DDR400
Creative Audigy 2 ZS

Note that this error has happened no matter what driver I install. Also, this error has happened regardless of what I do. It happened after I first made the computer. Then I had to reformat, and it just happened again.

Most likely its RAM related.

Are you overclocking?
Try loosening up your ram timings or use a ram divider and see if the problem goes away.
(dont worry about keeping the ram in spec for now, just lower its settings to see if the problem goes away, then work from there)

Of course memtest86 is a good way to test your ram.

The system is completely fresh, no overclocking of any kind going on.

I had previously thought that the arrangement of the RAM sticks (2x512) had affected system stability, and I move them around, but it continued to crash on me. It doesn't even crash when I'm playing games like Doom3. I'll be doing maybe 1 or 3 small things and suddenly it will die (last time it crashed I was transfering files to another PC while setting shared permissions on another drive).

Searched all over as ive never personally encountered this type of error b4 and i've built literally 100's of pcs.

Found this bit of info.
Error: "The service database is locked". One may get this error if an attempt is made to stop/start or otherwise perform some service-related tasks when a server has just started and the systems still performs some of the startup functions in the background thus keeping the services database locked. In this case just wait a couple of minutes for the system to finish its tasks. It could also be that a faulty service installation procedure "locked" the database and in this case a reboot may help.

Keywords i noticed are the systems still performs some of the startup functions in the background thus keeping the services database locked

And these.
(i'd set a restore point b4 trying these!...Well honestly i'd make an image using drive image pro so i could restore my pc if these dont work, but not everyone uses drive imaging software, so i'd AT LEAST create a restore point!)
Also, i'd personally rather get to the root of the problem instead of using a fix that may work, but i'll never know the true cause/cure in case it happens again.

DCOMbobulator

Error-Nuker

Best possible solution ive seen so far was to install all updates including SP2, i see you're not running SP2, so i assume this is due to your own opinion of SP2 being a worthless peice of ****!....LOL
But its worth a try if you cant resolve the errors by other means.

Lets hope someone replys thats seen and fixed this error b4.

Sorry i couldnt be more help.

But i'm definately subscribing to this one to see what happens.

I haven't tried your suggestions, but I have another wonderful error to add to the crash list:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10005
Date: 1/14/2005
Time: 5:02:47 AM
User: *******\*******
Computer: *******
Description:
DCOM got error "The service database is locked. " attempting to start the service ImapiService with arguments "-Service" in order to run the server:
{520CCA63-51A5-11D3-9144-00104BA11C5E}

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

So now 3 services are tied to the crashing of the system. ImapiService, winmgmt, and ccPwdSvc. I may just stop those from even running. As far as I know ImapiService is tied to windows burning CDs, however Nero uses it's own service to accomplush this. Winmgmt is also not necessary, because I do not run a server which needs to run scripts. And lastly, ccPwdSvc is used by Norton to verify users to go past the firewall, which I do not have enabled as ZoneAlarm is taking that task. Shutting these down may solve my issue. I'll see how it goes.

Trouble files thus far have been located:

winmgmt: %systemroot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
ImapiService: C:\WINDOWS\System32\imapi.exe
ccPwdSvc: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccPwdSvc.exe

But it doesn't bring me any closer to solving this issue.

Your suggestion of DCOMBOBulator has been taken, and the DCOM service has been shut down. My computer rebooted fine and it's working okay. Only time will tell if the issue is gone. I'll report back my findings.

Alright I think the DCOM was masking a more serious error:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Save Dump
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1001
Date: 1/14/2005
Time: 1:10:40 PM
User: N/A
Computer: **********
Description:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x10000050 (0xc087ca1a, 0x00000000, 0xc087ca1a, 0x00000002). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini011405-05.dmp.

The plot thickens....

You sure you're not getting a corrupt installation of windows?

You seem to be getting some odd errors for a clean install of windows.

Seriously, try memtest 86 and maybe prime95 to see if you hardware is operating error free.

And try typing chkdsk /f in the run box and say yes when asked then reboot and let windows run chkdsk and see if there are any errors.

Oh, and while i'm thinking of it....
If you're running a SATA hard drive,
theres known corruption problems with the NEO2 and using SATA 1&2 on that mobo.

If you're running SATA , be sure to use SATA 3 or SATA 4 connectors on your mobo.

ok, i have some time b4 work so im gonna explain what I would do.

1: go into your bios and set the following things as shown below.
(if you dont see some of these settings it is a hidden feature, if ya dont see it, dont worry about it for now)

I dont see what precessor you're running, so set your multiplier to your processors default!!!
Same with the cpu voltage, you want it at your cpu's default!!!

WHAT Cpu are you running?

Under Cell Menu
(if you dont see some of these settings it is a hidden feature, if ya dont see it, dont worry about it for now)

High Performance mode - MANUAL
Aggresive timing - Disabled
NV/ATI speedup - Disabled (this is a hidden feature, if ya dont see it, dont worry about it for now)
DRAM driving strength - NORMAL
Dynamic Overclocking - DISABLED
SPREAD SPECTRUM - DISABLED
HT Frequency - 4x
Cool 'N' Quiet - DISABLED
PCI Clock Autodetect - ENABLED
Adjust CPU Ratio - x10 This is for my A64 3200, set it to YOUR cpu's default!!!
Adjust cpu FSB frequency - 200
Adjust agp frequency - 67 (this is to be sure you AGP is locked)
Adjust cpu VID - 1.550v (this setting should net you about a 1.44v VCORE upon reboot , once you set it and reboot, go back into your bios and check the H/W Monitor - PC Health Status to verify your vcore voltage) note: this is for my 90nm Winchester! , your cpu's default voltage may be different!
CPU Voltage - (By CPU VID)
Memory voltage - auto
AGP Voltage - 1.50v

Under DRAM Configuration
(im setting these based on your ram brand/speed and YES they are conservative settings for troubleshooting, your ram should do these timings easily, i just happen to have some Kingmax pc3500 here, so i tested it for you)

Max Memclock (mhz) - [200]
1t/2t Memory timing - 1T
CAS# latency (Tcl) - 2.5
RAS# to CAS# delay - (Trcd) - 4
Min Ras# active time(Tras) - 8
Row precharge Time (Trp) - 4

USE SATA 3 or 4 connectors on the mobo if you're running a SATA hard drive.

THESE are the settings i'd do a clean install of windows with!

Also, i see you're running an Audigy 2 ZS , ive read reports of people having issues with those and the NEO2, although i'm not, but i'm running a plain old Audigy 2, so i'd remove the audigy 2 for now until i have windows installed and running so i could be SURE the Audigy2 isnt causing any errors.

After much searching it seems the solution "may" be where i originally suspected.

Please try this!

Download memtest86 iso and burn it to a cd.
set your pc to boot from cd and let it run.

See if you get errors.

Get the memtest bootable cd iso HERE.

I ran the test and everything came out clean. I don't know what to do. I have actually the same CPU as yourself.

One thing I noticed, however, when looking through the BIOS, is I took a look at the Hardware Monitor. It listed some information, as follows:

Current Sys Temp: Normal (don't remember but it was low, 84F)
Current CPU Temp: Normal (also low, 104F)
+12.0V: always hovered around this number. It would go to 12.1, 12.2, back down to 11.9
+3.3V: also hovered above and below this number
+5.0V: again, same situation
Battery: (can't remember)
+5VSB: also hovered.

Maybe I need a bigger PSU? The one I'm using came from an Antec SX835II and is rated at 350W, but it's about a year and a half old. Could these problems be arising from lack of power? Considering the hardware I'm running, this is the only conclusion I can come to. But it doesn't explain why the previous system I had didn't crash (pentium setup, used Asus P4PE, 2.4GHz, 768MB PC2700, same vid card, hard drives, sound card, cd-roms, etc). The only thing I've changed is the mobo, ram, and CPU. Also, something to note is that when I transferred over the stuff, I didn't format my HD. I just used it. The crash problem happened then too. This is why I think it may be a power issue.

Let me know.

I'm going to try to overload the system and try to crash it. Hopefully it doesn't....

LOL,
So im not the only guy who does that kinda stuff.

I crank the heat in my pc room and close the door, turn on prime95, while looping 3dmark in the backround to test for stability/heat issues.
Always figured if pc stays stable through my homemade sauna / torture test, then i'm good to game at those settings.

It keeps crashing whenever I use a CD copy program, like Nero or DVDShrink. I can't figure this crap out. This is really frustrating and shouldn't happen with a brand new system.

Boy, do I feel sheepish. Ba-a-a-a-a-a.....

In the manual, it has a diagram of the DIMM slots, and it says in the caption, "DIMM SLOTS 1-4, from TOP to BOTTOM". Okay?

http://hardocp.com/images/arti...37DQDXhU9bbR_1_4_l.jpg

I always figure that the RAM slots are top, and CPU is middle, and PCI slots are bottom, the same way you put orient the motherboard in your case.

Well, as such I assumed that DIMM 1-4 were, as in the diagram, top to bottom. Wrong. They're reversed. The DIMM slot 1 is green, not purple. I had my two sticks on the TOP two DIMM slots (slots 3 and 4), which the motherboard doesn't like very much. I have them in the bottom now, and I'm burning a CD, while typing this and playing music. No sign of a crash.

*Sigh* I suppose Murphy's Law got the best of me.

Yeah, but if nothing went wrong it would take all the fun out of this hobby.

When something goes wrong and i end up hitting all the overclockers forums etc...etc...
Once i got it figured out, i always walk away knowing/learning more than i did b4, cuz i cant help but read all the other threads on the stuff that interests me while i'm there.

So i always view it as a positive experience that helps me in future projects.

I'm STILL playing/pushing this NEO2 to its limits, theres just too many overclocking options for me to play with.
Every time i think i'm done, the next day i "brainstorm" a new bios setting combo that i think may yeild better results than what i have now.
Then , there goes 4-5hrs of my day.

Heck, ive spent WAY more time running stability/ performance tests on my setup then ive played games.
ANd i enjoy every minute/hour of it.

Glad to see ya got it worked out, NOW OVERCLOCK THAT THING!
