BSOD on some videos

Most downloaded videos play fine on my PC. I use Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 (rev 89) with K-Lite Codec Pack 4.3.4 (Full). However, some vids always cause the PC to blue screen of death (BSOD)--and it's always the same vids. I've updated the drivers on my Radeon X850 XT repeatedly, but it doesn't help. Also, the BSODs don't correlate to a certain file extension.

Try the problem vids on a different system and see if they play ok.

Yes, try the videos on a different computer and check them. Also, try to play the files with VLC player and see if it plays fine on the same system your using.

One of the videos in question plays both in VLC on my PC and in MPC on another PC. What's that say about my PC (not rhetorical)?

The videos require codecs that if there installed then should play if setup properly like when you use a program like k-lite which also installs the MPC on some versions. Just because a file is says an .avi type file it can use different encoders to make it so you need to know what was used to encode it and install the right codec.

ok, I'll use Gspot to make sure I have the codecs setup right. any other (newer) progs I can use besides Gspot to check for codec installation? Thanks again.

Yup, make sure you have the right codecs installed with the help of GSpot codec info.

On some codecs used by the vids in question, GSpot 2.70a says "Codec Status Undetermined". The codec GSpot says is needed is "WMV2" with a codec "Name" of "WMP v8". Not sure how to alleviate this issue as I uninstalled K-Lite 4.3.4 (Full) and updated to K-Lite 5.02 (Full) last night, but problem persists.

techmanc, thanks for the links. Not sure which apps I should use there. Is GSpot giving you enough info (I don't know what the undetermined status means) or should I try a substitute? Also, I can post a ss if necessary. Thanks again you guys!
