DFI NF4 Ultra-D mobo
Athlon 64 3800+ X2
OCZ EL 2x512MB DDR400 memory
EVGA GeForce 6800GS videocard
Maxtor Maxline 250MB SATA drive
OCZ 520W PSU
This setup posts fine, I install Windows XP w/ SP2. All goes well it seems until I install the nVidia chipset drivers. Numerous BSODs ensue after the Windows logo screen, or after the wallpaper shows w/ no taskbar and no icons.
I also tried: (most incl. a fresh windows install)
- one stick of memory in DIMM slot B-1 (second orange slot)
- Radeon X700 graphics card instead of the GeForce
- Radeon card in the second PCI-E 16x slot
- install Windows on an IBM Deskstar IDE drive instead of the Maxtor SATA drive
- same CPU/memory Radeon card on an ASUS A8V-E SE. All went well until I installed the VIA 4-1 drivers . Among others it installed FreeDOS in the boot sector and I was unable to get into windows w/o a BSOD afterwards.
- a D-Link network card instead of using the onboard LAN to avoid having to install the driver for it
- disabling onboard devices not used (serial, parallel, firewire, sata when i only used the ide drive)
- cleared BIOS's, loaded defaults etc.
I memtested the memory and it passed w/ flying colours.
In my initial install, the nvidia graphic drivers seemed to convert the bsod's into momentary freezes followed by 2-second black outs, but only in Windows. When playing a game (San Andreas) it performed flawlessly.
I kinda have a hard time believing it's the CPU or the memory. Dual core incompatibility? Both the DFI and ASUS posted reliably but things went awry it seems when I tried to install the chipset or graphics drivers.
Any tips?
thanks
