I use bittorrent as much as possible. It's the responsible way to share files of every kind. It offloads bandwidth capacity to those that are using it, and enables small organizations to distribute data that would otherwise be cost prohibitive.

Me 2 but people came to the conclusion that the protocol is illegal and bad which is not the case. The protocol is perfectly legal is what you share than can be right or wrong. Some sites even banned the mention of the word torrent.

Yes, because if you pay someone to host your pirated content it magically becomes legal.

the point is that 95% of the people on p2p only download and only because they can get it for free or they have OCD/mental issues about hoarding digital content. either way they want it free

you can easily set up something via dropbox where you download/upload via sharing folders. you don't even have to code anything like some of the new decentralized p2p networks i'm reading about. you can just share stuff out and pay the $10 or $20 a month to use dropbox.

but even with that most people don't want to pay anything which is why at some point enough sites will be shut down so that no one will start another one. or it will be too hard/long to use it

Well sometimes it cost more to download it than to go buy it in the stores yet people chose torrents. Why?

When they can do something about news groups then I'll give a shit. I have not used news group since the 90's but it might be time to go old school.

Why can't they do something about Usenet if they want to?

Well how long has news groups been around and nothing been done about it yet. In the 90's this was how everyone was getting files. Back then I spent more time on news groups then anywhere else. Even I question how it stayed up. Trying to shut down newsgroups would be like tying to shut down the internet not going to happen.

I'd think it would be easier than shutting down torrents. Usenet relies on centralized servers and you have to pay to access some of the groups that host big files. So the government could go after the servers or the payment systems, either would ah heck up Usenet pretty quickly.

I think it's just not a big enough target for the gov to bother. Usenet is still not even on the radar for 90+% of the people on the net today.

From my understanding newgroups are protected by Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act. So this what is keeping them up.

I wonder if magaupload will try and use this as their defense. They can clam they were deleting the files when they were alerted. Youtube is doing the same thing but they are getting away with it. The other thing is that Youtube does not have is a direct download but there are easy ways to get the file.

Yeah that's probably true, be interesting to know how much traffic the binary newsgroups see.
