A friend of mine teaches foreign students to speak English. Today someone brought a camera in and asked my friend for a photo with her. He asked some others to be in the photo as well and one of them replied saying that her religion (Buddhism) was against having photos taken of her because it "sucks the soul out of you", or something to that effect.

He was telling me about this today and I was intrigued by this....I tried searching google but came up with nothing.

Anyone ever hear of such a thing? I'm starting to think it's shenanigans.

That is (or was, don't know if any still hold to it) for (some) of the aboriginal peoples of Australia, IIRC. Never heard that about Buddhists.

I don't like getting pictures taken of myself because I think the same way.

What a crackpot religion! Obviously the correct religion should involve a god who impregnates a woman with himself so he can be born and then killed as a sacrifice to himself to save you from the sin he gave you at birth. Duh.

You realize this is far worse than your parents believing the morning dew will give you arthritis, right?

religion adapts

but no it's not a buddhism thing as far as I know, but it may be a cultural/regional superstition.

Well, he did leave out the part where you have to be against gay marriage. Otherwise, however, it seems to be pretty accurate.

Does this soul sucking work the same way with digital or film cameras? Where does the soul get stored? If I upload the picture to pics.bbzzdd.com, does the soul get downloaded to the computer of every single person who views the image? Do souls suffer when an image is compressed to JPEG? Can I power my PC with soular energy?

I think she's superstitious, or else severely ignorant about her religion. The Dalai Lama doesn't seem to care about having his picture taken, and if he's on NTSC interlaced video, he's getting his picture taken 29.97003 times per second.

Buddhism, like Christianity, exists in several flavors accross a number of different cultures, so it comes as no surprise that this person's idea of their religion includes this, but is not by any means a central tenet of Buddhism.

There are relatively primitive Buddhists just as there are relatively primitive Christians.

There are Christians who believe in handling snakes as a basic part of their liturgy, an there are Christians who do not.

Lol, here in the West our view of what constitutes Buddhism is heavily skewed towards the more esoteric approach of Zen Buddhism, while in some isolated Himalyan llamasary it often leans WAY more towards a more simple and authoritarian, shut up and sit still and don't question the head monk, punk kind of thing, backed by liberal use of corporal punishment.

Not disagreeing with anything you said; Your comments are spot on.

I will add though, that I watch a lot of documentaries on Buddhism (Props), especially the ones filmed in isolated parts of the world, and I have never heard of any sect of Buddhism that believes this... which isn't to say it couldn't exist, just that it is definitely not a standard part of the religion.
